Distributor Belt Replacement DIY
Hi all,
I have finally finished off a DIY article for replacing the belt inside the dual distributor. My web site here. Even though this is somewhat "uncommon" on 993's due to the vented distributor body, just remember that it is still just a little belt and can break after time. Mine was broken at just over 72000 miles.
Now this is NOT an easy DIY and basically tears your distributor completely apart. Not just a few parts - every single one comes off. So most people might want to leave this to a pro - like Steve at Rennsport. Nonetheless, if you just HAVE to know - there it is.
Please send me any questions, comments, critiques, and of course, corrections if you see the need. Thanks.

BS911, I can't see your page. It says that you've exceeded the max transfer allowance.
Let me know if you want me to host the page for you. Or better yet, ask Robin to host the page for you.

Hey Jeff, thanks for the offer. I was actually in process of getting a real provider anyway, and this had kind of forced the issue now that Yahoo allows like 3 hits an hour. So... everything is over on:

I also sent the article over for Robin to include on the p-car site.

Hi Brian,
Outstanding DIY, you've convinced me to send my distrib away when it needs this repair.
Oh, and your website is nice... I did enjoy the wedding pics too... however I couldn't find any honeymoon pics. Must've been some sort of oversight on your part.....

Brian,
Your web page came up perfectly for me. You have put together what appeares to be a very in depth DIY set of instruction with great pictures.
I enjoyed the other pics on the site. Keep up the good work with the DIYs and congratulations on your recent marriage.
Remember, now is the time to convince wifey that the Porsche car will need new shoes about every three (3) months. This will set the stage for an ample tire budget should you get hooked into DE and or track time.

Thanks all for the kind words.
Don't think I'll be convincing the wife to let me get some racing treads for the 993 any time soon. After all, She just let me trade up from the 964 to the 993 this summer. I better wait until next summer for that one. (shhh.)

As far as driveability symptoms, you would hear some pinging or detonation under any sort of accelleration. You would also notice a lack of power and throttle response. Nothing major in the symptom department... it would just feel like something was "off." Other than the pinging, you really don't notice it too much until you have it fixed. The easiest test is to remove that secondary cap and try to spin the rotor. If the belt is intact there is no way that thing would spin.
CAUTION!!!
I really, really, really, don't recommend this DIY unless you "just gotta." For the first time around, it takes way too long, has some significant risks if you don't get it right, and really doesn't save you all that much money. Steve Weiner has this job down to a science and you can't beat the price he charges for it. It really took me about a whole weekend.
But if "you gotta" and you have the time to spare and are pretty adept in the garage, it should certainly pass some time.
