D.J., and everyone else, you can also get to this double tube mechanism from below. Use a lift or four jack stands. Remove the long center protection plate which is held in place by about a zillion 10mm bolts. You’ll also have to remove a small protection plate in the front, and remove or loosen two more. The center tube plate interlocks with the others. It’s obvious once you see it. Once you have this removed, the shift mechanism is readily visible and probably easily and more thoroughly lubed than from above.

Greg,

I don't know about the others, but at least my tranny 'kicks' a little when I'm changing gears. It does it when I cnahge gears skowly, but when I do it fast, it doesn't (or at least I don't feel it). I think it's normal. Guys... is it?

Tom,

Did you go in from underneath for the sole reason of lubing the shift mechanism or are there other maintainance issues under those plates that need attention?

Also, if you went in to lube the mechanism, what was the condition you found yours in, and did you find the shift feel improved afterwards? Thanks!

Hi Edward,
I went under there to check for something loose. I was experiencing a problem where it would feel like the tranny was sticking in a gear. Specifically, when slowing to a stop light, I’d put the clutch in to take it out of gear, but it would take considerable force to move the lever, and I’d feel a distinctive pop when it came out of gear. It almost felt like I hadn’t pressed the clutch in. It was obvious that something was abnormal. It was also gradually getting worse. I suspected something loose in the linkage. The linkage seemed OK, but the forward transmission mount bolts were loose. This mount is at the very forward part of the tranny, right where the linkage attaches. I tightened the mount, and now the problem is 95% gone. Every now and then it still requires more force than I’d like, usually when coming out of second. Anyone have any ideas? Right now I’m kind of chalking it up to the “nature of the beast.”

Some other notes about the linkage. Take a look at this picture. I forgot to mention in my post above that you’ll have to remove the rubber boot, part number 18 in the picture, to access everything. Part number 27 is the inner tube, and the outer tube is composed of part numbers 2 and 3. The plastic bushings that wear out prematurely are part numbers 15 and 16 (the sockets are plastic and they enlarge). When I was looking from below, I could clearly see the inner tube (27) coated with grease, as it should be. I suspect that those who have experienced improvements by spraying silicone on it have merely washed away old, dried out grease, and as soon as the silicone dries, they’ll be back where they started. The proper thing to do would be to lube this tube with the correct grease. Perhaps some expert could chime in with what the proper grease is. It might be possible to lube the entire thing by moving the shifter back and forth, but on the other hand it might require removing the outer tube to get at the middle part.

Hope this long winded post helps!

Tom,

Thanks for the details and the pics. My shifter actually feels fine, though preventive maintainance was what I was driving at. Perhaps I'll take a peek under there to check out the condition of the factory grease. Thanks for the tip!

Finn,

My car does the same thing (kicking) ...mainly from first to second, and mainly when the car is cold.

No idea why....
