Default Most over-priced Porsche part?!

Two self-adhesive clear plastic stone guards for rear quarter-panels:

$223.66

I did not weigh the parts, but it would not surprise me if they were literally worth their weight in gold!

Can anyone beat this for sheer outrageous over-pricing?

RL,

You know you can buy these from Invincashield? For a narrow body 1995 to 1998 it is kit #3611, item #12 "Rear Fender".

Price is $76.00 for RH and LH sides. I installed these and they fit and look as OEM.

Thank you, Mike.

I wonder whether anyone makes silver-colored stone guards similar to the original Porsche ones?

RL,

Didn't realize your's are (were) originally silver. That may explain the Porsche $$. Of course the clear would serve the same purpose, but aren't original and correct for the car.

I'd bet your stuck with Porsche on the silver replacements. Not much of a market for an aftermarket supplier.

And I thought the exhaust tips were pricey!

Mike, when you removed the silver OEM panels, how did you do it without damaging the underlying paint? Mine are also in need of replacement.

Graham,

The panels peel off eazy-peezy. No danger of lifting the paint.

Mike: the OEM replacment panels are clear - Porsche don't supply silver ones any longer unfortunately.

Graham,

RL is right, they peel off easy. I did one side with a heat gun (carefully) and it melted the protective film's adhesive and made cleanup a chore. The other side I did cold and it was much less cleanup of adhesive residue. Do it cold and you'll have better results.

Just get an edge pulled away and work it off slowly. Takes a little time but you can't damage the paint.

I used 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover to cleanup the residue. Then a coat of wax and put on the new Invincashield pieces.

I got a couple from Gert a few weeks back and they came to about €150 for the pair. I think you are being ripped off. Sounds like OPC pricing.

My OPC actually had a problem sourcing them, they were on back order for several weeks. I had the two quarter panels resprayed and was driving around without the quarter panel foils (official name for the clear plastic bits!). I was worred about stone chips.

Gert to the rescue - a quick mail to Gert and I had them in less than a week - they were then fitted by the OPC. Gert also undercut the OPC by about €50!

Getting back to the original question, the stone guards were 3 times what non-original parts cost. Bad, but we can do better

I have seen nice looking chromes exhaust tips for $15. The Porsche large ovals are around $300 each, in the UK and Sweden anyway. That's 20 times a generic part.

Jaak resistor looks like a good contender. Is that a normal 1/2W resistor? That's a 10 cent part! Does any mounting hardware come with it?

How about a Phillips 35watt xenon lightbulb for $315.99 at the dealership? After returning it, I found the exact same bulb for $39 on eBay.

I'm not sure that ebay prices should count as they are not generally available prices. Nice saving though

I missed the instrument rings suggestion before, sorry. Yep, that's definitely a contender!
