Default RSR Muffler Install

I have had the nod from Gert and my RSR will be with me soon WAAHHOO!!

I would say I have a reasonable competence with spanners, having rebuilt cars / engines/gearboxes in the past.

Question is how long does it take to fit said RSR in the real world?

I looked at Mr Sun's excellent site with the nice pictures of shiny mufflers and it looks like a piece of cake to install....I have rusted on tailpipe bolts etc.. What are the possibilities for me to "Bozo" this and get leaks etc...

Any reponses from those who have done this will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Clubsport 1

It should be a relatively easy retrofit except for the rusty bolts. I would be interested in hearing an RS with Robins RSR mufflers. I guess some of the the other owners would be too.

Perhaps we could arrange a sound off.... if anyone is interested? Comparing the RSR's, Cargraphic N-GT (which i have), and the standard RS system.

I'm in the UK for a few weeks come mid-October.

BR/Phil...

It's very easy..even for a novice like me. I sprayed the bolts with WD40 the night before. The first side was around an hour as I took my time and planned everything out. The second side took 15 minutes.

Good luck!

Hi Clubsport 1,

It's a very simple install...as mentioned, you probably want to spray bolts/nuts with WD-40 or equalvalent and let soak for a while to aid in removal although removing said bolts on my '97 was no problem. I'd disagree with the advice on needing "snap ring pliers". I have a pair but didn't use them. The "banjo" clamps are spreadable by hand enough to get around the pipes without too much effort. Just my experience from my DIY of almost a year ago. Cheers,

I also got an email from gert this weekend (woohoo), will be attempting the fit myself as well, I figure that if I can rebuild a car (VW Bug) from the ground up I can fit a muffler.

Many thanks for the responses guys,it sounds as relatively easy as i hoped. (famous last words!)

I am not over impressed with the sound of the standard muffler,it sounds a little more purposeful than a regular C2,,but Gert told me that due to the 3.8 lump, the RS is more restrictive than normal.

When I get to 4000rpm and above I cannot even hear the exhaust, the airbox was drilled previously and due to reduced sound proofing on an RS all you get is induction roar,,,which is not too bad!

I think the RSR mufflers should help bring the induction/exhaust harmony more into balance..With any luck it should be more 917 than Sherman tank.

I hope to take the car to Bruntingthorpe airfield mid October to hear and feel the difference at the upper end of the range....
I hope to post on effects of the fitment soon........

I got home last night to find the RSR package had arrived,,thanks Gert.

I didn't want to rush things, but managed to fit one side to the car.
I have to say starting the car and listening to the noise from one tailpipe compared to the other was very interesting....i am not sure if it is TOO loud?

I hope to fit the other side tonight and take the car on a run,,,hopefully outside of the garage it may not sound as loud as i currently fear.

Have you fitted yours yet Poon?
