I think it has a lot to do with the person who is handling the registration/title transaction making a judgement call.

I think you're both right... If you go to RMV to register and have no bill of sale indicating what you paid, and the car came from a state with no title or a title transfer that fails to state the consideration paid, then RMV will pull a value from the book. But if you have a title transfer that recites the consideration paid or have a Bill of Sale and the number is not wholly unrealistic, then RMV will accept that number.

Some sellers will leave the number blank with a wink, but I pay the tax and don't play any games. For those who do play this game, it's really not worth it and will only lower your basis from a capital gains perspective.

Now that works in Texas 🙃

In Washington State, you can gift your car every other time. Doesn't matter if it is family or friends, etc... If you gift car to your friend, he cannot gift it to another buyer. The another buyer has to pay the tax, but then he can gift it again. You can swap cars of equal value without tax penalty based on blue book value in the Washington State's system.

In in the same situation, if I found someone will a similar 993, mileage and condition as my 993 C4S, I would like to trade it as I have some daughters that would like to ride in my 993. Unfortunately, it has the rear seats delete option, so it is only a two-seater.

Good luck on finding your dream car!

You can also just write a bull of sale for $10k and pay a tiny tax. Say the car is without engine and you have one you are putting in prior to inspection if they ask. It is 20 years old and the clerks are not walking KBB databases.

And hope they don't ask to inspect the car.

Im just curious at this point is this all just a rhetorical question regarding how a trade would work or are you really talking about trading. You mention your not sure about your color choice tmcsc. What color do you have. What you looking for. I feel the same sometimes. If i had my perfect color combo it would be classic silver/red int. I searched and searched abd endend up with white with blue int. I like the combo but am not a huge white fan. What are you looking for in the "perfect"color

Somewhere between curiosity and interest in doing something similar in the future. I have a Midnight Blue and while I like it and it's definitely growing on me, I realize I still love my dream colors: Arena Red, Speed Yellow, Pastel Yellow, and Forest Green. Still having fun playing with mine and getting it how I want, but I was curious if anything like this had been before in case I want to do it in the future (though it turned into more of a tax discussion, which was also helpful).
