Post OT: Any Bay Area residents want to go karting?

There's a new kart track open nr Fremont - I'm going to check it out in a couple of weeks - just wondered if anyone else local(ish) would like to come along for a blast?

No affiliation blah blah...any takers?

Heh heh - my outlaws live in Pleasanton and I have a lot of family in Fremont. I'm coming over for a vacation and a friend's wedding so will be there for a couple of weeks. I usually go to the Classic Racing w/e in Monterey with friends from LA but not this year.

I was there last night with a group of 40 people. They rented the track for an hour as a private party. The facility is similar to Speed Ring in Santa Clara except that the track is a bit shorter and the karts are more powerful and appear to be in better condition.

We had a great time and they were quite flexible since we had people in our group of varying skill levels.

We had 4 run groups. Each run group was given a practice session and a heat race. The top 2 finishers in each heat race went straight to the "A Main" while positions 3-5 competed in the "B Main". The top 2 from the B Main advanced to the A Main so we ended up with the 10 fastest drivers in the A Main. There was some confusion as I was gridded on the LAST row after setting 3rd fastest time of the night, finishing 2nd in my qualifier and proceeding directly to the A Main. People who finished behind me in the qualifer and had to drive in the B Main were gridded ahead of me. Go figure!

As you might imagine, it was a slug-out for 20 laps. I passed 5 drivers to finish 4th. 1st - 3rd place finishers were awarded nifty Gold, Silver and Bronze medals. It was tons of fun and highly recommended.

Last time we went for a friendly speedring drive, he had something like a thousand laps of practice beforehand.

This would be fun -- the track at speedring is fun (if insanely noisy) -- but I was expecting you were talking about shifter karts at Sears (Russell racing) ... that would be fun too.

Hey all,

Have a great time if you go Karting, just be fore warned.. I've only done it once and don't know if I'd ever do it again.
I cracked two ribs on a shifter kart and I never had any contact with anything.
These karts are designed for kids and can be physically abusive.

I would highly highly highly recommend rib protectors if you do decide to go. Cracked ribs hurt like hell.
And as much fun as it was, I'd much rather spend a day at the track in the 911.
have fun.

I'd be down, let me know when. I went there for the first time a few weeks ago, during the daytime. If you go before 5:00pm on a weekday, the cost is only $16. My friends and I took two runs. They let us run the track backwards the second time around. It was much more challenging, but fun. Just make sure you bring a t-shirt and shorts to wear underneath your racing suit, you'll be sweatin' big time.

You guys better quit... If my head swells any more I won't be able to get out of my office.

I'm up for the 18th as well. I'm doing a 100 mile bicycle ride on the 17th so I may be in full recovery mode!

Yes, myself and 3 p-car buddies will be there at 3pm on Sunday the 18th. We're going to book a couple of slots ahead of time in case it gets busy. Probably 2 or 3 sessions with a sessions rest in between from 3pm onwards.

Anyone welcome (be nice to race against names that I know rather than complete strangers).

Hope to see some of you guys on Sunday.

cheers

Surj
