Chip For A 96 993
I have recent boards regarding the above subject although, I have not heard if is possible to chip a 96 w/o changing out the ECU. It appears Imagine and Powerchip advise it is possible to do. I was told by Powerchip that they install the chip in the ECU for you and ship it back. Has anyone chipped a 96 w/o changing the ECU and if so who did it or where did the parts come from. Still waiting to here if its possible w/o the ECU change. Please advise....

ddixon2327,
You may want to call:
Steve Weiner
Rennsport Systems

Steve is extremely helpful and knowledgable about this topic and you can trust him to steer you in the right direction. He will tell you the pros and cons of his and other's products with no slant.
You may want to get the nameplate data off of your ECU first, though. There's alway the chance it was changed out at some point, unless you've owned the car since new and know otherwise.

The FVD site is not as clear as it could be but it does seem to indicate an ECU exchange for the 96 model.

What was the cost, and how much power did you get? Did you have to change the whole CPU out? Thanks

Rolo,
I did not "chip" my car. I had the ECU out last winter while the car was in storage and had it ready to send to Steve. I noticed that the part number on the ECU matched Steve's "unchippable" (is that a word?) list.
Seems my car was an early 1997, but Porsche used a (leftover) 1996 ECU. ECU was original, as I had to drill out the mounting bolts. It had never been out of the car. Total cost for this mod, with the new ECU, would have been $2,500 or so, so I passed.

Condo Bob -how do I find the unichip site? Also, did you notice an improvement?? Did you install or did unichip install for you?? Please expand on your post.

Unichip is a "piggyback" ECU that plugs in-line to your factory computer, effectively disabling the factory chip. Google search for unichip should do the trick...
(note: I don't have a unichip in my car, so I can't speak to its effectiveness.)
