Default 993 as daily driver

I currently own a 89 3.2 911 cabriolet which is an occasional driver. I have realized, however, that most of my time in a car is to and from work, and I do not drive the cab to work most days (Volvo 850 is used instead -- not nearly as much fun). I also live in Pittsburgh, PA where the winter weather is not conducive to convertible driving. My solution to my desire to spend more time in a Porsche is to buy a 993 4s coupe to drive everyday, summer and winter. I would keep the cabriolet for those Pittsburgh "convertible days" (nice temperature with low humidity) -- there aren't that many. The 993 would be my daily driver. Does anyone have experience with, or an opinion on, this? Good idea or dumb idea? How does the 4s operate in snow? Is the heating and air conditioning adequate? What about maintenance? Is there anything else I should consider before committing to drive a 993 4s year round in Pittsburgh. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Hi "112344" (weird name ),

I drive my 993TT every day, rain or shine, summer or winter - that is, when it's not in the body shop following a shunt in the "Kink".

They can take it. The Pirelli Wintersport 240's are excellent. Only drawback? I have noted some minor white flakes on some aluminum suspension pieces, which I've been told is a form of corrosion.

Best of luck with your decision.

I had an '87 3.2 Cabriolet that was an occasional driver also. It was a treat to drive when it wasn't too hot and I could put the top down, but if I couldn't go "open-air" it stayed in the garage. When I bought my 993 cab I immediately started my hunt for another daily driver (I had sold my previous one during my BMW stunt). It didn't take long to realize the 993 is a great daily driver - top up or down. It's reliable and has REAL air conditioning, not like my previous 3.2. Do it and you won't be disappointed!!

Daily Driver? ...Heck yeah!!!
I often wonder why more don't! I've put nearly 30K in all-weather commuting and track events with NO irregular issues to date, just routine maintanence. I can't speak for snow, but I certainly wouldn't hesitate using it for the daily grind. And after a long day at the mine, I've found the drive home in the 993 is theraputic. Good luck!

I use my 993 4S as a daily car without problems. It's a superb car.
I can confirm what Edwars has written: "I've found the drive home in the 993 is theraputic. " It's really true.
I used also a 964 C4 as a daily car. The 964 was also a superb car even in the snow. I've still not driven my 993 in the snow, so I can not compare the 993 with the 964.

Use my 993 4S as a daily driver. No problems at all. Every drive is an epic occasion. The car is built to be driven not sit in the garage.

So true! Mine is a daily driver except for a few weeks a year when the ice/snow is too much but then it would be too much for most cars anyway.

You might consider getting rid of the 89 and getting a 993 cab with a hardtop for the winter.

Absolutely - drive mine every day, even in the snow (just dont stop moving). I love it, the car loves it. Just make sure to keep the salt off it during the winter season (a big problem here in the UK)....

I believe that 996 should be daily driver and 993 for pure fun.
I second also this therapeutic effect.

I use my car as a daily driver too. As a matter of fact, my nosey neighbor came over this week after he saw me with the "hood" up. I was giving it a drink of oil. He is a big Corvette enthusiast and has a new ZO6. His question was whether I had any problems with the car! Many of his friends have had issues with them. Nope just giving it some oil. I have had the car over a year. It was serviced completely when I purchased it. Yes, it needed a new clutch last year and this gave it some down time. After that time, it was obvious the car was extremely reliable. I have not had one problem or failure since last year. New tires were added this year. You need to be carefull when looking for the car and be sure you sift through records for obvious recurrent problems. Stay away from problems that seem to repeat. My car had no issues. I have been very pleased with it.

I concur with all of the positive comments re: daily driver. My Targa is my daily driver, and I put 22k miles on it in my first 12 months of ownership, with no adverse problems.

Only caution is that you're in Pennsylvania which does have a little salt on the road. Don't how the conditions compare to KY where Anir is. I know someone in the local PCA with a C4S that uses it as a daily driver. Also looked at a C2 before the one I have and that one had 80K+ miles. With the exception of a dent on one of the fenders, the car felt and drove fine.
