I am driving along the road on my way home from work. It was a nice day out. I was in some light rush hour traffic when all of the sudden I heard a pebble hit my windshield. I could hear it crack. And there it was, just in front of the passenger seat, a pea sized impact point with cracks around the size of a nickel. It's about 2500 miles until my next big service. Do you think I can wait or am I going to be driving 100 mph one day and the whole thing implodes and lands on my lap?
I would be very surprised if the windshield failed catastrophically, unless it was hit by something very large (in which case the windshield would have probably failed even if it wasn't damaged).
What you have is called 'star' damage, the DIY remedies like Permatex won't help since the damage is mostly internal.
If you can live with the damage (not in your line of sight) you don't have to worry until a crack starts forming.
A lot of insurance policies have a separate, lower deductible for windshield damage, check with your agent.
How timely. See my <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=3;t=008942" target="_blank">Safelite windshield replacement post.</a>
