I have a MB C series that I bought used for my daughter. It's nice but pretty basic. Definitely the E series for the wife.
I had a Lexus LS 400. Bought from my dad when he got a new one and it lasted 21 years before I let it go...still working fine.
My brother got an A6 last month - a 2012. Wow, beautiful car.

The car is a different experience from a gas or diesel. Once you drive it, it makes other cars seem very archaic.
The Tesla is very fast (0-60 in 3.2 seconds), very smooth, and very quiet (like an isolation chamber). It has instant torque in a way no other car does, but yet the car is very easy to drive. Center of gravity is very low -- probably lower than the 993. The car is unflappable. The combination of brutal performance and total serenity is very strange - and wonderful.
After you drive it, every other car is annoying, slow, loud, vibrates and is smelly.
The interior has improved - they offer sport seats and alcantara now.
All I'm suggesting is that it's worth the time to drive the car before you buy any other car. Then look at the financial model (which is different) and decide if it makes sense. The car is available these days as a CPO.

Kind of sad to say, but I think we'll all drive one, or one of its descendants eventually.

I meant to add a comment about the Tesla - I can't wait to have one in the driveway but my friend bought one for his wife - they live in a hilly Canadian rural area close to the city and the first week she ran it dry and got stranded. The hills and having the heating on dramatically reduced the range and she not being a car person didn't pay attention to the battery levels.
Anyway, she now drives a Cayanne hybrid.

When Tesla makes a car that can go 400 miles in sub-zero temperatures or extreme heat on a single charge that doesn't take hours, they will own the road. But if you can't drive the car up to ski country, then what's the point? The technology is oh so close, but not quite there. And with only three superchargers in all of New Hampshire and Vermont, it will take some time.

I can tell you from my personal experience the BMW V-8 old or new have many reliability problems they use in the 5 and 7, I've had 4 of them. The 6cylinder is fine but for me lacks power. The diesels are also great in the BMW's but for 50k your not going to get a new 5 or 7.
Also look at Volkswagens, any of the new lines are extremely good.
The C300 MB all wheel drive 6 cylinder you can get under 50 and it's an exceptional car...I had one for rental for a week and it's unbelievable in the snow and a very fast car. A lot of magazines really liked it.
I've had 2 Lexus's while the reliably factor is a 9 they are boring to look at and drive....for me.

My wife sold her DD which was a MB E320 CDI for the last 10 years. That was a nice car with a real nice turbodiesel motor but it was time to move on.
Plus the kids grew up with this car and put some serious wear on the carpet and door cards.
Wife was not really happy using the 991 for a DD. She did not like scraping the front lip pulling into urban driveways and the "bumpy " ride.
We considered Panamera and another E-Class. She liked the style/performance of the Panamera but the poor visibility was a black flag. She ordered a 2016 MB E550 Cabriolet (with all the electronic driver aids) last April and because of the special paint color she will not get it till Feb 2016. So....
We picked this car up last week as a DD for her until the new E550 comes -2000 MB SL600 - V12. Wonderful GT car - she loves it.

been a big fan of audi A8 for some time and have owned several including current 2011 .
u can pick up similar CPO examples for under 50k. i drive the V8 only and prefer the older reliable 4.2 in 2011-12 MY.
also look for lightly used 2007-10 (D3) version for much less dollars. still a great ride preferred by many audi guys to the current D4.
the A6 is nice but in my experience feels more like an econocar in comparison with its 3.0L and less toys.

had a 2013 E350 for 2 yrs (lease) - our first MB after yrs of BMWs. Very impressed with the car overall. Comfortable and very reliable ... Its definitely simpler in exterior and interior styling than an Audi a7 or 8 but from what I hear, its more reliable and holds its value better. The only compliant: if you go with the AMG wheels, know they are made of butter and will bend very easily. Wifey bent EVERY one of the 4 on the car in 1 winter in NYC.
try to find a car with a P2 package - its got lots of little nice to haves.

While I can't speak for the new ones, the w124 e-class are great cars. And you can buy a small fleet of them for the price of a nice set of 993 sport seats.
