Stuttgart,

That was the coolest video i've ever seen. That music was perfect ( I love metallica). I've watched it a few times.

What would the lowest entry point be into club racing like that? I'd love to do that some day. Right now I have a 964 turbo but I don't really want to punish it like that. Hell i don't even park it within a 50 foot radius of other cars

Ian, get yourself a 944 and go club racing. If you can afford it get a 964 or 993 and go have fun, keeping your Turbo mint as you want.
I can tell you its a great rush and extremely addictive!

I didn't really mean "any old" camera, you should definitely go with a minidv, Hi8 is terrible(you'll be replacing the camera monthly when the heads get dirty). Also, the larger the camera, the less visibility you have out the rear window.

Like C4guy says you can change the lense out on some of the camera's, you don't want to be stuck with a camera that has a narrow zoom and an inability to change lenses.

Another note, you might need to tape a piece of foam over the mic, or you'll just get wind noise(especially if your car interior is quiet)

As for brands-
My dads jvc has been unstoppable, I took that thing out west in my jeep fourwheeling(tons of dust) and it never had a problem.
He's been though a couple Sony hi8 camera's and they never worked, and Sony would not even attempt to rectify the situation. Their new DV cameras might be better though.

Ian-
I would say the lower PCA stock classes like I,G, F, are the cheapest and most competitive. I plan on getting a car of my own set up for I or G in the future, and as i worked it out, it can be done for under $12,000 including the car, if you buy most of suspension, safety equipment, etc. used. Of course thats not including a trailer, tow vehicle, gas, entry fee......never mind

Now if you want to get really slick with the incar video you can buy a "lipstick video head". Basically it's a tiny 2" lens that you can tape to the dashboard or anywhere. So instead of having a 2 pound camera shaking on a camera mount you can have a tiny lense taped down to say your harness bar - very stable video. A high quality lipstick cam runs $200-$400.[/QB][/QUOTE]

If one would use a 'lipstick' camera, what would you record with? Is there typically a 'video input' feature with most cam-corders?

My new DV canon that is smaller than my palm has it too.

BTW - my Hi8mm has probably seen 2000+ track miles in various cars over the years and it has never missed a beat. Every video on my page from in my car is shot with that 7 year old Hi8mm Sony. Never even had it cleaned.

My camcorder has an S-Video input so that you could import video from say a VHS tape or plug it into the back of your satellite receiver and use your camcorder like a VCR.

If your camcorder has an aux. video input - you could plug a lipstick video head in there. Most cameras will automatically sense the incoming video stream and "know" to record the aux stream instead of the regular lens (which would probably be capped if using a lipstick cam).

Its a 993 cup (GTC2), my Dad and I both drive the car(i'm extremely lucky), and i usually race out of class. So, at sebring(which was my first race) i raced with GT4,B,C, etc.
At road atlanta i raced with group 1(gt1,2, GTC3), hence everyone blowing by me on the straights.

hopefully i'll sell a lot of cars and trucks this summer and be able to buy my own 911.

Hello jean-marc,
yes we are having a blast. We have gotten most of the mechanical bugs worked out(clutch master cylinder, brake master cylinder, etc.) and it is running like a top.

Good to hear from you and hope all is well

The lipstick cameras seperate and protect the heavy expensive camcorder from vibration and damage. The smaller lipstick camera also give you the advantage of mounting it almost anywhere; under the car, facing the driver, outside the window, on the bumper etc. Of course to use a lipstick camera, you need a camcorder cabable of receiving A/V in.

Lipstick cameras are also lighter than camcorders and with the proper mount, will not "bounce" around as much. It seems to be a matter of preference regarding the use of lipstick cameras vrs. a camcorder only solution. You certainly don't need a lipstick (or bullet) camera, but you do need a decent camcorder.

Blatant advertisting mode on:

With that said, my company assembles a camera solution, providing the pieces needed to capture in-car video (except a camcorder), at a reasonable price. Autoxcam In-car camera solutions

Blantant advertising mode off:

We also have white paper describing (at a very high level) what it takes to capture in-car video and get it online.

Thumbs up

Hi Stuttgart,

Nice video but do you have a copy without the music so that you can listen to the real music...

Cheers,

David

I'll probably be in touch soon in a private message, that 4 way video multiplexer caught my eye!
