Cool Got Video?

Please pardon the cross-post, but the 964 forum has been kinda dull lately so I thought I'd share this you folks over on the 993 forum because you're such an active group!

I started a new thread entitled <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=4;t=004230" target="_blank">Got Video?</a>
that encourages you to post links to your collection of favorite Porsche video clips; autocross, driver's ed - whatever.

I know how you 993 guys are - you're a bunch of damn track rats! I know you guys have got some good video footage to share!

BTW - I WILL own a 993 C4S someday!

Terry,

I might have video mount (I'm planning to get one before Sebring) at Sebring, I'll record bunch of stuff there, so if/when I have some, I have to learn (you might have to show me...) how to get that into a videoclip...

Stuttgart,
Thanks for the post, great video, I thought the music was a good addition.

Ditto Chris' question, what camera?
Most of the in car videos I have seen seem to have a narrower angle of view than yours.

Cheers,

The camera is an older JVC digital video camera. No special lense, just using the widest zoom angle. Having no passenger seat allows us to mount the camera farther back on the diagonal of the roll cage.

A lot of guys use the special mini race cameras, but those are very expensive and not really worth it when any DV camera will do, as they all(i think) have fire wire ports on them. You can buy the special firewire cable and plug it into your computer's 1394 firewire port. I had to buy a fire wire pci card, $40 or so, then you need a video capturing program.

DJ-
Its a 993 cup (GTC2), my Dad and I both drive the car(i'm extremely lucky), and i usually race out of class. So, at sebring(which was my first race) i raced with GT4,B,C, etc.
At road atlanta i raced with group 1(gt1,2, GTC3), hence everyone blowing by me on the straights.

hopefully i'll sell a lot of cars and trucks this summer and be able to buy my own 911.

Stuttgart,
Thanks for the info.
I have a camera mount, but I'm still shopping for a camera. A friend offered to loan me his to try out, I'll make sure the zoom is all the way out.

The problem with the videos that have a narrow view is that all sense of speed is lost, very boring, and not much of a learning tool either since you can't see much of the track, only straight forward.

Your video, on the other hand was entertaining and informative. You can really see the advantages of braking deep. I'm watching the Sebring video again, while looking at the track map in another window, pretty educational.

E.J. Great video at VIR, playing with the BMW.

Thanks,

For onboard video I recommend that you use a wide angle lens. Not all camcorders are threaded to accept different lenses - so be sure to keep that in mind when you're shopping for a camera!

C4 Guy,
Thanks for the tip.

I did some casual asking around at the track about lenses/cameras, but most of the time I was just getting blank stares in response. These guys are into cars, not video cameras.

There's always the internet for research, I put in a few hours before buying my still camera, I can do the same again. Any suggestions people care to offer will be appreciated, brand, format, features, price range. I'm not much into video, so any camera I buy will be pretty much exclusively for in car use.

Cheers,

I'd disagree with Stuggart's comments that any old camera will do...

If you're going to buy a camera specifically for in car use - here's what I'd look for:

- MiniDV Format (100% digital recording)
- Firewire Output
plug it right into your computer editing and posting on Rennlist
- Interchangeable Lenses
You'll want a wide angle for in car and maybe a telephoto lens when shooting cars around the track
- Anti-Vibration Circuitry - Some cameras have image stabilization software built into them. In some cameras it works well for shaky hands but get's completely lost in the thrashing it will take in a car. Depending on the camera, it may be best to switch this feature OFF.

Now if you want to get really slick with the incar video you can buy a "lipstick video head". Basically it's a tiny 2" lens that you can tape to the dashboard or anywhere. So instead of having a 2 pound camera shaking on a camera mount you can have a tiny lense taped down to say your harness bar - very stable video. A high quality lipstick cam runs $200-$400.
