On the purely practical side, the 4C will lose you a lot of money in depreciation, unlike the 993.

8C maybe but that's a whole different ball game. Italian v German no contest and I love Italy, but I would rather own a totally reliable asset proof reliable German made car whatever.

Too much pasta lately? I would buy a low mileage 97 turbo manual first.....
I believe the locker room has spoken!

Low mile 97 Turbo = $200K

Alfa 4C = $75K.

Totally different cars in almost every way.

That said, I agree that the peanut gallery has spoken, and few, if any, would be interested in trading a 993 for a 4C. The lack of manual tranny in the 4C kills it for me, personally.

If I wanted a mid-engined car in that price range I'd be looking at a 987 Boxster Spyder or a Cayman R. Known quantity, well executed, and will leave you some cash for upgrades, too!

There are a number of comparison articles out…here is a 4C compared to a standard Boxster

http://www.topspeed.com/cars/car-new...8378.html#main

There were several 4Cs in booths at Rennsport….looked pretty cheap to me.

I had both a 993 and a 987 Boxster Spyder (since sold with the 981 Boxster Spyder in route) and it would be hard to chose between the two, the newer car is faster and the superb mid-engine suspension setup is sublime, yet the 993 is just as much fun to drive.

If I had a worn out 993 and the 4C had a 6 speed manual and a usable front trunk, I'd find another 993.

When I first heard about the 4C, I had just sold my Giulietta Spider (the last of my 4 Alfas) and had purchased a Maserati GranTurismo. As I heard more about the 4C, I actually considered trading the GT for one. But, the more I heard, and the more I drove the Maserati, the less inclined I was to trade.

Then I bought the 993 Targa. Still considering the 4C that some Alfa Club friends had ordered. Then the reviews began to come out. Then I got to see one up close. No way I would trade the Maserati for one. My days of driving buckboards are long over. The GT and the 993 have spoiled me. Yes, the 4C is kind of sexy. But, not as much as the Maserati. And, the impracticality of it rules it out.

So, bottom line - the 4C is no longer of any consideration. The 993 is a winner in so many ways, as is the Maserati GT.

Look at the pictures below. Would you swap either of these cars for a 4C? I sure wouldn't.

BTW, the 2nd photo is distorted by the constraints of this forum. Click on it for actual proportions.
