Greetings! I recently purchased a '95 993 over two months ago. I have noticed that at times the fog lights don't work (they seem to have a mind of their own. Is there anything I can do to troubleshoot the problem (check fuses?) without taking it into the dealer?
thanks!
thanks!

Welcome to the board and congratulations on your purchase!
Sorry, can’t help much on the fog light thing. If they work sometimes, it’s not a fuse. There’s probably a loose connection someplace, and those can be difficult to find. Can you narrow the conditions down a bit? E.g. they only work when… or they never work when… Note that when you turn the high beams on, the fog lights automatically go out.

Thanks Tom,
It really is a random occurence: once when I went over a bump in the road they came on but that does not happen everytime. The only variable that is consistent is they do not come on when I first turn them on.

It sounds like a loose connection someplace. The bump caused the wires to touch each other briefly. These can be hard to find. A good place to start would be the switch. Push it in and out a bunch of times to see if you can clean the contacts. Wiggle it around, does it feel loose? If it works sometimes, the switch is your problem. Another place to check would be the connections on the lights themselves. Remove them and check. Bad bulbs can also do this. The filament is broken but makes intermittent connections once and a while. I think there are instructions on how to remove the fog lights in the bulb replacement section of your owners manual. It’s pretty easy.
You can trace bad connections like these with a VOM, but try the obvious stuff I listed above first.
Good luck,

Doh! I don’t know why I didn’t think of this yesterday, but check the relay. It’s another one of those parts that can become “intermittent.” It’s in the fuse box in the front trunk.
