Thumbs up Optima Battery

Optima Battery fits perfectly, no modifications at all. Model SC75U with 720 CCA.

Purchased from the Interstate Battery Store. I think Interstate owns Optima or the corporation that owns Interstate owns Optima too.

Ron,

The SC75U sounds like an improvement over my orange top Optima, which was not a natural fit due to the inboard location of the terminals and rigidity of the Porsche positive cable (see pic below).

Are the terminals located in a more outboard location on the SC75U?

Anir,

Yes the terminals are more outboard, although they are located farther to the rear compared to the ones in your photo. The rear being defined as closer to the vent tube in your photo.

The case is red and there is a large lip on the bottom of each side of the battery. I can not tell from your photo how wide the lips on the bottom are. Your battery case is also larger, I think. While mine is centered in the space for the battery I have more space left on the left when I'm looking at your picture.

I don't have a digital camera so I can't post a photo.

The Red Top Optima was a drop in replacement, and still left room for a battery maintainer alongside it. Our local membership store stocks the Red Tops for just under a Ben Franklin, as I recall.

Just be aware that in some location like where I live there are 3 different model numbers for the red top battery. I know for sure that one of the model numbers did not work because I tried it. Sorry I don't remember what the number was.

I thought I saw some red tops available at Costco. Don't remember pricing since I've got a yellow top already didn't pay better attention. If you're looking at buying, might want to check Costco first.

I'm in the San Jose area; don't know about other areas.

Dumb question? What is the benefit of installing an Optima battery?

George,

Not a dumb question.

1. Completely sealed and truly maintenance free

2. Dry cell technology, so no risk of acid leakage and subsequent corrosion (commonly seen with traditional batteries). Notice the vent tube is not needed in the above orange top pic.

3. More powerful (i.e. higher cold cranking amps, or CCA)

Seems like everytime Anir responds to a battery post, I have to respond too. We've both been through this before and are using the optima orange top battery.

I'd second how important using a battery that cannot leak. Unfortunately, my luggage compartment has already suffered some effects of leaked battery acid from the previous owner.

It was a bit scary that the old battery that came with my car didn't have a vent tube hookup. Obviously, whomever changed it didn't know p-cars too well.

I just ordered a Red Top Optima for my car as it was barely turning over in the A.M. and the battery is four years old at this point.

I did a fairly quick search on the internet and found this particular company to have the best price. $90 + 22 for shipping.

No one local had these batteries so mail order was the easiest way.

<a href="http://www.batteryweb.com/optima.cfm" target="_blank">http://www.batteryweb.com/optima.cfm</a> The model # has changed to 75/35 from 725U.

Hey Greg,

Nice link, with good prices (e.g. the Orange Top is $106, whereas I paid $135 when ordering direct from Optima).

The Red Top is slightly less powerful than the Orange Top (650 CCA and 750 CCA, respectively, at 0 deg F), but I would gladly forgo the additional power for the ease of installation. The Red Top is actually 0.10" shorter, and avoids the battery disconnect cable altogether, which in turn avoids the difficulty I have with getting my carpet perfectly flat.

I'm waiting until my optima orange top gives out so that I can replace it with the red top too!

But I think that I'll have to wait at least 2-3 more years....

Is Optima really the best option?

What about Odyssey, for example? <a href="http://www.odysseybatteries.com/" target="_blank">http://www.odysseybatteries.com/</a>

Or <a href="http://www.performancedistributors.com/batteries.htm" target="_blank">Dyna-Batt</a> ?

I would be interested in the LIGHTEST available dry-cell battery. Does anyone know what that is?

The Dyna-Batt dry cell is only 13.5lbs (6kg)!

I replaced mine with the Red Top. Drops right in and no mods required.
