Post struts on engine lid loose??

Hi everyone,

Let me just begin by saying this message board is the best thing that could ever have happened for porsche owners. Thanks for being in existence.

Now question. Should I be concerned about purchasing a 96 C4s that has loose struts on the engine lid. Could it mean that the engine was worked on a lot because the lid was lifted often or is this a common problem? Anyone have any insight?

I assume by "loose" you mean that the
struts do not hold up the engine lid.

The struts are a common wear item. Typically
these are replaced with "heavy duty"
versions available from Performance and
others. They are not difficult to replace,
nor that expensive, but it can be tedious
and frustrating since the area is cramped.

Check the front - similar struts there also.

Nels, I will add that if you put the "heavy duty" struts in a normal, non-winged engine lid, be careful about unlatching the engine lid when someone is standing above it -- it can pop up very quickly and forcefully!

A friend's 993 (sans wing) has heavy duty struts on it (probably meant for an aerokit equipped car) and it almost knocked me out one day!

Performance sells them a lot cheaper than the dealers. I got the heavy duty model.

I have the heavy duty (Weltmeister sp?)struts on my 88 that we just put in and they are great. There is an article on installation on the pelican site.
