Results of Regearing a 1996 C2 using Guard's 3.500 1st gear on new mainsheet
#16
The gears in MY head have been turning around over this mod today and i wondered if some ratios suit a non-varioram car more than varioram due to torque and where in the rev range it starts to pull again instead of been off the cam. Mine is a '95 and choosing the ratios seems a very tricky and costly exercise. Any advice for someone who is entering into the wacky world of Re-gear.
One other thing, what is the advantage of a Torque Biasing Differential over that of one with clutch packs (LSD). Was this supplied through Guard too ?

here us a comparison of 2 993s w/ Jlaa's gearing one is a healthy 3.6nvram the other a healthy 3.6 vram
The gearing works well w/ either engine, w/ only a hint of under gear in 5 & 6
the torque biasing lsd is oriented toward street and A/X driving, it doesn't help w/ braking stability or induce a little more understeer like the clutch packs which are more oriented to track driving but are also good on the street.

And the torque biasing differential (we don't ever call them an LSD because there is no limit to how much slip they allow. They go open at the limit) also saves you $1000 over our LSD. That's the price of another gearset.
Jason, you are quite welcome. Glad to hear that it turned out just the way you wanted it to.

Matt

Total costs? Absurd – but again, these are all playthings. There’s no ROI in a financial sense. Only ROI in a “fun sense”. If I wanted ROI I’d be looking at high growth rate companies or companies with OM of 35% or steady 10 year balanced equity net returns of 7%-8%, etc.
The total gearbox parts and labor ran 11K. I added a Torque Biasing Differential so that ended up being 13K....

Just picked up a 6-Speed G50/20 for my 964 build.
I was previously going to use a G50/05 that I bought last year.
I might change a few gears depending on price, if I change only 6th gear does anyone know if I need to change the mainshaft as well?

For 3rd through 6th, your current mainshaft is just fine.

I spoke with you previously about regearing my 1st and 2nd. The PTO regeared 3rd though 6th. I'm still interested in doing it when I go in to fix a leak between the gearbox and engine. Purchase of a Turbo put the plans on brief hiatus. It's on my 2016 todo list. My biggest complaints are 1st and 2nd but unfortunately for my 1996, this means a new mainshaft. I keep flip flopping since I don't drive my 96 as much anymore. Regear and suspensions are the best mods going but unfortunately are two of the most expensive.

ROW (Germany) MY06 G50/21 donor gearbox - swap in 2000
Bill Verburg -
Could you post the forward gear ratio's of the RoW (German market production) MY96 3.6 coupe w/G50/21 gearbox?
Jlaa
I applaud your risk taking, oh yeah its a "slippery slope", when taking on the re-gearing pilgrimage. You have to want it!
The factory's Zuffenhausen Werk 1 shop had removed (now stored in garage) my '98 coupe's original USA production G50 with a donor MY96 RoW (Germany) G50/21 gearbox,, back in spring of 2000. With the RoW donor G50 gearbox having been thoroughly gone through by PAG, its been 15 years without so much as an issue. One gear oil service and the original clutch to boot; maybe 70,000 miles since the gearbox change.
On a recommendation from then Porschelist.org moderator Viken Bedrossen and other forum members,,,,, myself and other like minded 993 brethren took the gearbox R&R plunge. Before the word was out .... it was fairly easy to source an earlier MY production or RoW G50 for as little as a several grand in DM.
The very best single 993 modification money can buy . . . . . "Transformative" . . . . . +1 agreed.

Is there any books or online info on how to take a G50 apart for inspection....and put it back together? Basically I just want to take the nose off and peak inside to make sure everything looks fine.

Ok thanks
Any rules of thumb? someone told me to stick my finger in the oil drain hole and see if there is a bunch of gunk on the magnetic piece there....if there is then some bearings are shot. I'm also thinking it should be pretty smooth when spinning the gears. Anyone know what the sequence of gears when pulling the shifter rod?

Sorry to jack this tread!
So I have the 993 G50/20 with LSD in my garage. I also have a G50/05 that I plan to sell now that I won't need it.
This is the issue, or maybe it's normal.
For G50/20 when I spin the main gear, both axel gears move in the same direction as expected even under load....but the main gear only turns a bit and then stops. I.e., I can only turn the main gear a certain distance in either direction before it gets blacked. On the G50/05 I can spin it forever......
Is this is an issue?
