Question Bigger tires up front?

A few days ago Erik (AKA 993tt) posted:
I'm in the process of doing the same to my 993TT. I'm doing most of my riding on the street and goes to the track maybe 4 times a year so I want to keep my car as practical as possible. Here is what I'm going to do.
1. Put 245 tires in the front instead of the 225. Keep the 285 in the rear.

me again. I have the OEM Pirelli P-zero tires on my C2 and they sing and dance and make way too much noise, and the car does understeer a bit more than I'd like. I thought 911s were tail-happy little beasts? Anyway, will there be any clearance problems with 245 up front? How about 255? And when I do decide to upgrade, should I go with the Bridgestones, is that the current concensus?

Many thanks,

n.

You can go up to a 275 tire but I don't think you would want to go that far. A 245 should work well, your tire choice may be limited though. Fitment issues will totally depend on your wheels and their offsets. Another option is to install a larger rear sway bar to increase oversteer.

Simply changing to 245's will have little effect, especially when you are not at the limit of adhesion. Modern 911's a NOT tail happy, they just have less understeer than most cars. To make them tail-happy, you will have to make siginicant changes to suspension settings - springs, swaybars & alignment.

As mentioned by Mark D, you'll need to do more than size up your front tire to get rid of the understeer. I haven't done all these mods. to my car yet but as far as I can tell, the basic things to do is the following:
1. 245 tires up front.
2. Front strut brace.
3. More negative camber in the front (-1 to -2)
4. Corner balancing of the car and subsequent adjustments to the suspension
5. Harder swaybar in the rear.

In this thread you can find some info http://forums.rennlist.com/scripts/r...c&f=3&t=001511

or, search the old forum for "245" (what I did) You'll get lots of answers but many of them will help you.
