Question 993 Chain Cover Gaskets

Is replacing the 2 x timing chain cover gaskets on a '96 993 a DIY? If so.....how involved?
I have 54,000mls on a '96 C2 that is displaying the very beginnings of leakage from these seals.

My mechanic mentioned that the leak I've got is either from the valve cover or timing chain cover. He described the valve cover gasket as not too big a deal, but the time chain cover gasket as more of a pain.

I'll be interested to hear any informed DIYer weigh in w. an opinion!

Valve cover gaskets are easy. Other than regular tools, you need an 8mm allen socket that's about 6" long in order to drop the heat exchangers.
Can't comment about the timing chain covers but will confirm that I, too, heard they are a pain and probably not worth the effort.

Hi,

Not sure on the 993 but on the 964 that right side chain cover isn't coming off unless you first remove the pulley and A/C bracket. I pais a Porsche Tech $1k to do both sides and the large can gear "O" rings and retimed the cams while at it. On the 964 the driver side chain cover gasket didn't require the heat exchanger to be removed nor for that matter on the right side (993 might be different).
