Default Motor ticking/slapping sound

All,

I don't remember ever hearing this ticking or slapping sound. Maybe it's just been too long since I've driven her. Does she sound normal?

Thanks in advance....

Just looking at the video, it would appear that your fan may be hitting the shroud. Suggest you closely inspect to see any damage. If you have an inductive timing light, hook it up so you see in slow motion.

Take it for a long drive and warm it up, then report back. Sometimes after mine sits for a month or so, it has a somewhat loud ticking that stays until its all warmed up. Then it goes away completely and purrs like a kitten....

Two ideas:
1. Long handled screwdriver. One end on the fan shroud, the handle against your ear (or buy an auto stethoscope, cheap at Harbor Freight). Then repeat at various places on the engine. Will help to pin point your noise.
2. Pull off all the belts and run it only for a few minutes. Does the noise go away? Then add back the belts one at a time. Does the noise change with each of these steps?

This is good thinking. An alternative is to make a mark on one of the fan blades with some white-out or nail polish and see if the ticking synchronizes exactly with the fan's rotation. If the noise is from a little carbon debris in a valve seat or a failed lifter adjustment cartridge I would think it will not synchronize exactly with the fan's rotation. If it does the problem is in the fan.

Try Keiths suggestion, but grab the fan (while not running :-0) and see if there's any play. Looks wobbly in vid, but sometimes the vids are deceiving. Good luck, let us know.

If it's been sitting, could be hyd lifters have drained and the car needs to be driven? The fan base looks good and steady without wobble, so watching the blades may be an optical illusion?

Hi nine9six, if it was the lifter cartridge and the cartridge seal was still functioning to some extent wouldn't the ticking stop after a few second of oil pressure?

Pp000830,
I agree if the if's you call into question are true. But what (if) it's malfunctioning to some extent?

We have both seen many posts where new lifters don't charge/fill properly and continue with the BB in a tin can, ticking. (apples n oranges?)

Just offering the suggestion, without implying any correctness. I agree with taking the car out and bringing up to temp, and reporting back.

Keith's rec of screwdriver/stethescope to try to pinpoint the origin is a good first step, but we are still in need of feedback from the OP, yes?

When my lifters went, they would tick for five minutes before quieting down if the car sat for a few weeks.

I dont want to start anything here but..... What oil are you running? I followed the dealer recommended light weight oil and that made the ticking much worse when the car sat. I changed the oil (as recommended by several people) and the ticking went away for the most part. When I later rebuilt the motor, I found significant damage to the cam and several rockers.

Trying to avoid fuel to the fire, what weight and brand did you switch to?
