Default Mild lowering - best way to do it cheap ?

I have read the suspension FAQ on P-car, but I am still a bit confused about my options... All i want is a mild lowering of the car to "lose" the "993 on stilts" look ! I am also on a budget, and happen to find the existing suspension quite comfortable and efficient for my 2/3 track days per year (plus I have this HWFMR aplication to consider, I would not want to get too fast). That rules out PSS9 and even the M030 setup, which could fund the GDP of a small country...

The FAQ quotes (abbreviated):

" $350-$400 Porsche ROW, Eibach, H&R springs

Spring change only, for a visual ride height and handling improvement. The standard US shocks are too soft and are not a good match to these springs. These springs combined with standard shocks might result in a choppy ride rather than a firm and consistent one. It is better to combine these springs with either factory M030 shocks or after market quality units such as Koni or Bilstein (Eibach, H&R, springs cost about $350 the labor to install is about $400) "

So looks like the $350/450 option is a no-go then! What is the cheapest "good" option then ? M030 shocks ( how much $$$ ?) + Springs $350 + install $400. We're probably over $1000 already... I guess you cannot lower the car by playing with the torsion bars like on my 83, huh ? ;-) If anybody's got another suggestion for less money, I am all ears - remember I actually like the stock setup except for it's ride height...

thanks !

Your best option is probably to buy a set of used springs/shocks from fellow Rennlister who is upgrading to PSS9s and install yourself. With a corner balance and alignment you might be able to get this done for $500-600.

I have 030 springs right now and am looking moving up to pss9s soon. If you are in no real hurry, you can have first dibs on it once I change.

What I did was to get a US M030 setup some numnut had taken off his car, then buy a set of Euro M030 springs. Can't remember total price, but was close to 4 figures (install was done by 3 minimum wage people - me, myself, and I - then needed a 4-wheel alignment).

You like the stock setup? I found this absolutely floaty. You could always try to find Euro stock springs; should be all you need if you just want the ROW look.

In any case, match the spring/shock/swaybar setup; don't do things halfway or you could be asking for trouble in the handling department. And "on a budget", "cheap", etc. are not terms to be used in 993 ownership - if you can't do it right, don't do it.

I put the M033 springs and shocks on my cabrio, I think you can get them at carnewal for $1100.00, I'll be adding 18in wheels later this week hopefullly the ride won't be too much firmer.

As far as doing it cheap, I suppose if you can find just the M033 springs sold seperately for $400.00, you'll get the same ride as stock just 30mm lower.

Check out Roock lowering springs. http://www.roockusa.com/company/racing.htm
I had the same requirements as you and I went with their set up. They have a progressive rate spring (made by HR) but set up to be used with the stock shocks. The ride is good, not choppy at all. The ride hight is about 1.5 -1.75 inches lower and that floating feeling is gone. The whole job including an alignment was under $1000.
If you call, ask for Neil, he is the sales manager.
see my pictures on the website for lowering reference.

Does anyone (Viken?) know how much lower the standard ROW029 suspension is than stock US ride height?

Now this thread is making me wonder about my setup. I think I have the stock shocks and know I have H&R springs, lowered and 17" wheels. My rear tires are almost gone after about 5k miles. Car handles perfectly and I'm sure alignment is straight. Could the springs and ride height on stock US spec shocks be causing my rear tires (Kumhos) to be getting chewed up so fast? And what caused the rubber boots on my rear toe arms to tear? Front tires look new.

I meant to ask about that too and forgot... any consequences to lowering to euro height, for the steering rack and other "suspended" parts ? I know for some cars you need to add parts to maintain the correct geometry of all the suspension/steering bits...

Greg,

I have some Tech Art 993 lowering springs you can have for $100 and shipping. They are in fine shape. Can send you some pictures if you like. They are just sitting in my garage. I bought them for the same reason. But decided to go with the M030

That could work... Since you went to M030, does it mean you did not like the way the tech art springs felt on the car ? Could be interested.. ;-)
