I am planning to purchase a 1998 C2S, and just had
a PPI done at Hendrick Porsche in Charlotte, NC.
I have searched the archives, and would like to get
your advice or thoughts please.
Here are the stats of the car:
1998 C2s
Silver with black interior
motorsound option
aluminum accents
power seats (left/right)
39,500 miles
3rd owner car (This owner has put less than 2k miles on it)
I was able to confirm that this car won 1st place in it's class
in a PCA concourse event in North Carolina last October
I spoke with Steve, one of the service advisers at Hendrick
who described the car as "showroom perfect condition"
except for a very small (almost unnoticeable) oil leak at the
top of one of the cylinder heads. He said that this was
very common in 993's, and everyone he has known with
this kind of leak has not done anything about it.
He said that the leak was not significant enough to
show any drips on the ground underneath the car, and
that it could only be seen using a flashlight while the car is
on a lift.
He recommended that no maintenence be performed, and
said that the only way to completely stop a leak like this
was to do a top end rebuild, which would cost about
$5,000. Again, he said that was not needed.
I spoke with the owner , who said that he was not aware
of this small leak, as he has not seen any oil on his (painted )
garage floor. Additionally, he has not notice any oil consumption irregularities.
He will be emailing me a picture of the leak area. I will post it when I receive it.
Until then, what do you think?
Many thanks!

Rich,
This is a long shot but I was looking at and drove a car last year with the options you described and with about that mileage. I don't remember the owners name other than he was very nice. He lived right outside Charlotte like maybe Mooresville.
What is the owner's name and does he live on Lake Norman?

No, I never said the price was $28.5K. (I WISH IT WAS)
I don't know why GratefulJed got that idea.
The price is $50K.
I have tickets to travel there next week and pick it up.

Rich,
My impressions are from the perspective of a person who it turns out was looking for garage queen. I ended up buying a car with about 4600 miles.
Send me your email address and I'll do my best to give you the facts as I recall them.
Where did these guy's get $28.5, did I miss something?

I wish for your sake it was only $28.5 but I feel much better that it's not!
I would have thought with the low prices in California that I keep hearing about you could have found one closer to home at a better price...but, what do I know? After I bought mine in May I've been out of the market.
Now, I am just trying to find some aftermarket tips for sale!
Best of luck!

I want to address the single issue of the oil leaks. Yes, it is true oil leaks don't really mean too much for the mechanical health of the engine and typically don't any measurable loss of fluids.
I don't hate oil leaks. Rather, I despise them. I have a sign on my driveway that says "NO Parking" as I don't want any drip marks.
That having been said, an oil leak for me is an indication of possible neglect, or indication that the previous owner could not afford to repair the leak. If the owner could not afford to repair this, it may further be an indication that other items were not maintained either?
I am not familiar enough with the leak you describe to comment on the cost of repair. This factor might be debated or taken to another shop for a second opinion. I would, however, recommend the engine be thoroughly checked for other leaks or irregularities. Engines do not come from the factory leaking oil. This is an indication of a problem. Leaks tend to get worse with time. I would tend to factor the price of the repair into the overall cost of the car and either negotiate downward or find some other vehicle. FWIW, my '97 with more mileage is tight as it can be. No leaks. You should expect a slightly younger car should be similarly presented. The dealer probably does not want to bother with the repair. Not unexpected. On the other hand, a leak is no where as important to the value of the car as some mechanical suspension problem or more obvious clutch/transmission problem. Good luck.
