Saw this one selling at CostCo for around $600. Not a bad price. Seemed like a quality box.

My idea scenario would be to find one with tools already. Hopefully, there's a snap on ( or similar ) distributor who is cleaning out his garage??? ( I can dream, can't i? )

jeff, i got lista for some dumb high price. oh well, live and learn. but they are very nice with roller bearings. if you want one already stuffed with tools, check out the ferrari facom one from griot's garage, drool... i love it.

Hi Jeff:

Although I'm prejudiced (for good reason), the only quality tool boxes I'll recommend are Snap-On or Mac. You get what you pay for and people keep them for many years.

My advice would be to contact a local dealer of these tools and see if they have a trade-in or a repossession. Both are always a good value!

Like Steve W. mentioned, all Snap-On dealers will take trades for credit towards Snap-On tool boxes. Yes Snap-On is pricey, but very high quality.....

Lista is the high-end industry standard as far as storage cabinets are concerned.

Why is all the good stuff, always the expensive stuff????

I also noticed the Hammerhead box at Costco. I believe it is made by a more mainstream manufacturer (Homak?). It seemed to me to be a decent box at a fair value.

I have had a Matco box for over ten years. I won't claim it to be equal to Snap-on or Lista, but it has been trouble free and does have a lifetime warranty.

A close friend has a Lista box, and it was less than one would imagine. I will seriously consider a Lista when need/space/funds all converge.

It's tough to beat Costco. Quality products at competitive prices, always. They only have about 400 stores nationwide so you are lucky if you have one in your town. If you read their annual report you will see that their gross margins are lower than other retailers.
My Craftsman rollaway is going strong at about the 3.5 decade level. It was my Dad's so it has some sentimental value. And part of the tools in it are the original (still pretty much intact) Crafstman tools my dad gave me for high school graduation about 39 years ago. We used those tools to rebuild a 283 chevy for my 1955 Chevy Convertible. Isky Cam, Offenhauser intake, straight body, Red over Cream, American Racing Equip wheels. I use that chest most every day and it reminds me of some good memories. I wish I still had that Cevy as well as the tools., though.

Jeff - you should make that guy on craig's list a lowball offer, like $2k. He may really need to sell it. I did see that box at Costco. I'm sure it's not as good as Snap-on and other high end products, but it seemed pretty good to me. If you want to see it and get it, I can take you sometime.

I got the Costco Hammerhead. I almost could not get it home in my Grand Cherokee, it's huge (about 44" x 65" by 20"). However, assembly is a snap, and it is really a beautiful toolbox. It sucked up all of my tools (3 large size carry-type boxes) like they didn't exist. You know what that means? I've got to get me a whole bunch more tools. FYI, Hammerhead themselves advertises this box for $999.

I'm probably going to get one of the Costco boxes too, for the money $654 at my local Costco I don't see how I could go wrong.

I even saw one of these on ebay, it had a bid of $899.99. I'm not sure how to link to it but the title of the item is "ultimate tool chest 4 craftsman mac tools box"
