LOL.

I appreciate topic diversity.

Guys, it's not a 993 vs. Camry thread. It's just musings on how diametrically opposite these two cars are. A bit of a side step, nothing wrong with the thought.

I did drive my mother's (literally) Camries for two winters, one 2001 and one 2011. I have to say that 2011 is a perfectly serviceable car for what it is - an appliance on wheels that safely and reliably gets 4-5 people from place to place as needed. Hell, I've been driving my GF's base Lancer for the last month. They are all perfectly fine cars in "transportation sense". 993 is not a car in "transportation" sense, even though it's been my daily driver for 10+ years now.

It all depends on the point of reference, doesn't it? Hell, if I look at my 993 from the driver's seat of my dedicated autocross car, the 993 is a slow, overweight, poorly handling pig. Does it mean it's bad? No. It's just a completely different animal. If I look at dedicated autocross car from teh driver's seat of a 993, I see a slightly schizophrenic, maladjusted, battle scarred arthritic obnoxious tomcat with bad disposition and delusions of grandeur. Again, different animals.

Get both, the Camry is a great daily driver. They lease for $300.

Or, the best of both worlds, a Camry-beige 993

Uh, very few drivers will get close to that 0-60 number in a MT 993 in a real world scenario (rev it to 4k+, dump the clutch, shift to second at the optimal time.) I'd like to see a 993 owner that drives like that, and if I do, I'll make sure to warn everyone I know to never buy their car.

Conversely, any mouth breather lame brain idiot can mash the throttle of a new automatic V6 Camry and get close(r) to the Camry test number.

Which is why for practical purposes the rolling start 5-60 times are more indicative of real world get up and go. All that said, Porsches aren't really designed to go fast in a straight line - we all know that, right? QED!

I can add to this thread...

I have a jaguar xfr with a few upgrades pushing close to 550hp. While this car is fast and has every gizmo in the world and can take turns, it s missing something.

Driven on the street this car feels soulless. It can smoke my 911 0-60 , while carrying 3 other people. The acceleration from 60 is mind boggling.

When I drive the 993 it's my car. I also have the same feeling in my jeep. Im beginning to think it has to do with the analogue feel and the manual transmission in both. Neither of the two ride smooth and both require attention when driving in bad coditiins or pushing the limits.

Now that I think of it, maybe an article on a 993 vs. A Jeep wrangler would make perfect sense.

Oh... Both have their own special greeting to fellow owners. The jeep is a wave for those that don't know.

Motor on.

Consider the Camry a luxury. In Colorado during the winter I'm piloting an all wheel drive volvo wagon that can't get out of its own way. I affectionately call it "tank" because it's hard to turn, stop, or much of anything else. The spring is a welcome sight to fire up the 993 and remember what it means to be connected to the road. A Camry would be a luxury but old tank is reliable and better in the snow. Getting in as many fall drives as I can before the great white shows up.

Default Toyota Avalon in Beige

I drove one for about six months, it felt so soulless. It drove like a couch. I already have a couch at home.

I'd cruise down the California coast in my 993 with Cindy Crawford as my copilot any time, any day

You can have fun in any car. It's up to the driver.

I actually love this thread. Got to admit, it's pretty different. I secretly lust after a new car quite a bit and am constantly staring at all the new Camry's I see on the road. Particularly like the silver Camry Hybrid (the brand new one) but would NEVER own one myself. It doesn't stop me from lusting for cars like this, the great working A/C, that they basically never break down, they are totally reliable beyond belief, etc. That's worth a lot to a lot of people.

Just not me.

That's funny, I always think the same thing when I see a picture of a 993 in this color.
