Anyone have pics of the "correct" painted center cap for a '97?
After seeing the availability of various different style and color caps, I would love to see a pic of a factory painted center cap that would have come on a C2S with the annodized 18" Turbo Twisty wheels in '97.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I'm not sure there is any "correct" way, although I've always pointed the crest bottom at my valve stem because:
1) I'm ****.
2) It helps me find the valve stem.
I also put the lug lock on the stud at the top of the crest (opposite the valve stem) because:
1) I'm ****.
2) It helps me find the lug lock.
3) In olden Porsche days, when the lock weighed more than regular lugs, it was "correct" to put it in that position.

I thought it was crazy when received points off in local concours for not pointing the right way. Was told that's how they come from the factory. Last time I was there, I checked and thats how they do it!!!

Maurice, I don't suppose you have a picture of yours. there are so many different versions of even "plain" ones that it's hard to tell which one your refering to. Thanks!!

I think this is the full lineup - don't know which one was the oem option for a 2S, but my Carrera came with "A" as the painted crest option.

Dan, as usual, you are the man! I was just about to photograph these from the Performance Products catalog when I realized that I left it at work.
I have "B"s, and I want to know whether "A" or "C" is the correct one. PP told me that "C" SHOULD be the correct one, since "A" was designed for older wheels. However, it's interesting that yours came with "A"s. Note that the "A"s are $94 more than "C"s.......each!

My '97 Coupe (narrowbody) came with the "painted crest" option and had the "A" version. I'm about to get 18" hollow spoke twist wheels and am trying to decide which center caps to get. The "A" caps on my car are looking kinda old and ragged...I've heard from others that the "A" caps tend to get worn lookng quite easily when exposed to any weather at all. I was considering the "C" caps, but didn't think that they were ever an option...if they were, I will probably re-consider. BTW...thanks for the photos...this really helps clear things up!

The question I have...and maybe you can answer this, Dan...which of these are the plastic caps and which are the metal? I have been told that the metal ones are actually higher quality than the plastic. Anyone know?

Well...I just pulled off my center caps and the part number off the rear is 993.361.303.07. According to the Performance Products (PP)Catalog, this part number is the "C" version (Plastic w/ Colored Crest @ $73.95 each). My caps are NOT the "C" version...they are the "A" version (they have a hole in the bottom left black horizontal bar and a hole in the upper right black horizontal bar). PP calls the caps that I have, part number 964.361.038.40. I am now totally confused!!

OK--Let's see if I help or add to the confusion:
The latest Porsche colored caps (993/996) are plastic with 2 holes visible on the front surface. Since I objected to the appearance (and price!) of these, I looked far and wide for older metal versions for sale.
I purchased the metal ones, seen below from PAP for $130 for 4 (Ebay--they're $41 each on their site). They appear to be convex instead of concave as are the similar ones shown in the Perf Products catalogue above, so they are not the authentic 993 caps. (They look better when the wheels aren't covered in brake dust!)
PAP Colored caps
These should be part no 928-361-032-11. These are metal without the holes, and I believe originally made for the phone dial wheels (928/993).
Porsche shows the latest caps to be 993-361-303-09. These are available from Gert and Suncoast but are plastic.
It seems like there was a metal version of these, (ending in -07 instead of 09?), and Porsche switched over to a newer, plastic version in 97 or 98?. Maybe that's why they're so expensive at PP...they are no longer being made ? (really $600 for a set. Yikes)
Seems like a question only Viken can answer for sure.

The paint does wear off or fade. About a year ago I repainted mine using Testor's model paint, a small brush & a reasonably steady hand. Took a few evenings for several coats, drying time & 2 clear coats. Look like new & have held up well.
No personal experience, but there have been several rave reports on other Rennlist forums for "Melissa" who apparently is developing a cottage industry painting wheel crests for $45/set.

Another mystery - some owners with metal type "A" crests have removal holes in 2 of the black stripes, others don't. Mine have NO holes & are oem on an early build MY1996.

These 928 caps are in fact the cheapest colored crest caps that are available.
They are around $85/set of 4!
