Anyone with a Bosch hammer near Huntsville AL?
A friend of mine lives in Huntsville, Alabama, and he have problems with his Bosch KTS 301 hammer and need contact with someone with this type of tool at hand. He's having problems using it in his car, and need to determine if there are any faults with his particular hammer or if it has software incompatibility problems. (Dealer PIWIS is working fine in the car)
Anyone in the area with the possibility to help out?
Thanks in advance,
Tore

bart1, I do not understand your message above.
My friend has indeed problems connecting to the Motronic unit, despite considerable effort to find the problem. We suspect there is a incompatibility issue in the KTS software. (latest version, 8.1)
Cheers,
Tore

The ECU of the 993 is not supported by the Hammer, to my knowledge.

Bart, thank you for the clarification. Glenn is my friend indeed. As far as I know supports the hammer all 993 Motronic units. (maybe I will see the first incompatibility issue in Glenns car)
I've had no problems using the KTS in a lot of 993's, accessing several Motronic DME versions.
Cheers,
Tore

My friend who worked at Porsche in these days, owns a hammer and owns a 964 says the hammer works with parts of the 993 but not the ECU. He says you need the "rubber boat" for the 993.

I'm still learning how to use my hammer so can't really contribute much here but I can tell you that the ecu shows up on at least one of my cars. I've not had a reason to open the ecu. I was just clearing servo and alarm codes. Maybe OBD 1 opens but not 2. Just guessing. Wish there was an instruction manual for it.

I have a KTS-301 with version 8.1 (10/1/95) and have never been able to connect to my 964's Motronic. Just pings back "Data Exchange Not Possible". I've tried with a Scantool and it too was not able to connect.

I have a Bosch Hammer and it works on all the systems on both my 96 and my wife's 97 993. Both cars are OBD II. I did have to buy an updated software module from Porsche when I bought the Hammer about 10 years ago.

Hi Rob, Thanks for posting!
Could you tell me which updated software module you have ?
The one I have says: "PORSCHE, Eprom mod. eng, Mod. intro. 01.10.95, Version 8.1" shown on the KTS screen after the Selftest screen.
Label on plastic case of Software Module says : "928 GV, Version 8.1/10.95, Made in Germany" .
My KTS can access Airbag, Alarm, Heater, and ABS 5, But not the DME.
What does yours have on Label and Screen? Thanks

Glenn,
Everything is the same on mine except on the software module, mine says Version 8.0/10.95, not 8.1, which is weird since the screen after the Selftest screen says Version 8.1, just like yours does. Are you having problems recognizing the DME with the Hammer hooked up to the car? Have you hooked the Hammer up to another 993 to see if it recognizes the DME in another car? If I remember correctly, the Hammer will not recognize the DME until it is hooked up to a car, so it may be a connection problem. If you want you can call me and we can hook our cars up to the Hammers at the same time and possibly find the problem that way. PM me if you want my number. Happy to help, Rob.

A Big Thanks goes out to Rob Kwate who walked me thru the KTS301 Hammer procedure while on the phone with me. With our Hammers connected to our 993's, his WAS able to access his car's DME and the other 4 systems (Alarm, Heater, ABS, Airbag), while mine could connect only to the other 4 systems and not to my car's DME.
The only difference seems to be that his software module is labeled version 8.0 10/95 and mine is labeled 8.1 10/95. This leads me to the suspicion that the 8.0 module is for North America OBD2 systems and the 8.1 is for European cars (OBD1 ?).
Bart1, I'm guessing that because your Porsche workshop friend is in Germany, their situation was different from here in the U.S.
Also, Thanks to Tore for starting this thread and sticking with me thru this situation!

There is no difference in functionality between 8.0 (german) and 8.1 (english) except for the language. However, I have seen english language memory modules marked with both 8.0 and 8.1. I don't know why, maybe the vendor had too many 8.0 labels lying around...
