It's called Humor. And for the record, I'm a Fat Bastard, so are a good chunk (get it) of my friends and we regularly refer to each other as such. We're all big boys and don't get upset over it.
Back to the Miata, IMO it seems to have gotten serious looking rather than "Cute" like most thought of it when it first came out.
