Unfortunately the 993 did not make it out of Chicago two weeks ago. A weird starting issue(battery not holding charge) and suddenly non functioning odometer(not a big issue but one that I have never experienced with any car I have owned).
When traveling alone I didn't want to be worried about the car not starting. The starter is relatively new and I put a new battery in last year.
So because I was on a tight schedule I didn't want to dick around getting to the root of the problem. I got to the California Melee in time and had a blast. Lots of old pre 74 cars. Now I want a beater 356. Badly. So badly. Or a 914.
Anyone got one they want to sell me in California so I can drive it in the Melee next year? I am still having no luck posting photos so I will make a Flickr album and post the link to pics and video.
Snow and ice in Wyoming on the way home! Exciting stuff. The VW killed the massive miles. It's no 911 though. Ok. Next year I take the 911! Michael

Pictures from the 3 Day Rally:
Most awesome 356 I have seen. Rally number written in Sharpie on the hood and the wing.
Taking a break.
Navigating
Drive through Redwood tree.
On highway 1.
Up in the hills
Taking it all in. Void!
My best friend, the Morgan driver, wins the Rally Dirtbag award! I navigated (very poorly).
My world
Mt. Tamalpais. A Morgan and the 356.
Cold as hell on the coast.
Glamour shot of the 356 which was last years Dirtbag award winner
Beer is good

A few more from the Rally:
For a fifty year old English car, the Morgan +4 was a trouble free ride. I can't say the same for the other cars!
Chain saw blender making Margaritas in the parking lot in Red Bluff.
Parking Lot Day #1
Austin-Healey Sprite. Wicked.
More parking lot.
Got to unpack the 8 track player so we can listen to Frampton Comes Alive!

It turns out that I might have done two things to cause the starting problem. I took a bunch of stuff apart before the trip and took the battery all the way out.
In doing all those shenanigans and reassembling everything I didn't tighten down the leads enough on the battery.
Secondly, I also didn't shut the frunk completely so the light must have been on overnight and drained some battery power.
I took out the battery again and checked the leads when I got home, charged it and made sure my interior dome lights weren't also on. Now it is running ok.
Stupid stuff in the end. The trip was great regardless and has inspired me to find a beaten to hell 356 and get it running and roadworthy.
I met a ton of cool people too!
Take care,
Michael
