I assume that the ignition key is nothing special and doesn't contain any special programming on it. So i can just get a few blanks on ebay and take them to any key cutting place to make spares?
Am I missing something?

After you pick up the correct blanks, I think you need to go to a dealer, with proof of ownership (registration)
EDIT
Thats what I get for thinking!

You can also get blanks from Sunset for instance that you can get cut locally, and they will fit with the key heads, etc.
You can also elect to have "factory-cut" keys ordered from the dealer. I did that once years ago through Sunset, I then required to prove I owned the car and they provide me with a fresh-cut key blank. Very useful since in many cases only one key is proved by the PO, and its worn.
Cheers,
Mike

The correct key blank for the 1995 993 is the Ilco PO5. Cost of the blank plus keycutting was less than $10 at my local locksmith.

Many other Audis and VWs use the same blanks. As matter of fact the Ilco or Silca keys are preferred for locksmiths because they're easier to cut. The og key blank is made up of mostly steel as widely used in Europe. Keys made for the NA market are mostly brass. Keys machines here in the US use different cutting wheels and motor speeds which usually leads to chipped cutter teeth when cutting steel blanks. Although no one really asked, I figured I'd explain the pros and cons!

For best results I would buy the stalk from the dealer made from the VIN then find a used electronic fob and program your car to accept it. The keys for these cars are 16 years old or so, no existing key that was used is anywhere near original profile. I believe a key cut from a worn key will just accelerate the lock's wear out as it may not not ideally position the pins in the cylinder..
Just an opinion.
