Default porsche phone/console

I just bought a 96 Targa with 16k, as my last one was in 78 a 67 911, it feels good to be BACK. It has the phone/console, cashmere, and it is missing a toggle switch., one of two. I heard the phone can't be activated. Does anyone know if Porsche has any of those swiches and what did it do. Also if I took out the phone what could I do with the empty space? The original sticker shows this as a 2k option. Thanks for any help Beto

beto,

I took my phone console out a week after I got the car. I replaced it with a standard console from LA Porsche. The thing was too darn big and intruded on my legroom.

The switches are the standard switches in any console. On your car there would be Targa roof, rear spoiler, exclamation point, door lock, and emergency flasher.

thanks bob but those switches are located elsewhere. These are very small. I like the looks of the console and the size also mine is a tip so the shift factor is not an issue.

does anyone have a picture of the telephone console (or possibly one in black for sale)?

I've been contemplating getting one to mount a pocket pc or iPod on.

Not sure how long it will stay on this site, but there is a photo of one here I believe.

The panel on the left side with the Porsche crest was to have a NAV screen installed. Don't think Porsche ever wound up offering it...

I had one of these consoles as well. The phone is an analog phone. If you can find a carrier that provides analog services, you should be able to activate it. But that service is getting harder and harder to find… The phone is pretty much out of date.

The panel on the left, where the crest is, is the speaker for the phone.

I replaced my phone console with a standard console from LA Porsche as well. LA Porsche buys these phone consoles, mounts after market NAV devices in them, and sells them at a handsome profit.

If you want to mount something there, like a current phone, NAV or other device, keep it. Otherwise, replace it with a standard console. You should be able make a buck or two in the process, as those who want the phone console to mount a NAV or whatever are usually willing to pay top dollar.

Wow - I've never seen this before. The thing I was thinking of is more of a small panel that fits to the RHS of the standard center console. Must be something different.

Dave - I think the panel you are referring to is the phone console that TechArt sells which is covered in leather and carpet and can have a speaker phone. Part number 064.550.202 and .230 - without and with loudspeaker, respectively.

THey also have a LCD monitor mount that sits where the ashtray currently is (requires cutting and notching a portion of the dash).

Maybe it's just me, but I think that telephone console is fugly! A huge hunk of plastic right in the middle of your dash! Ugh...

If you want to mount an ipod, how about just putting it in the door pocket? You could hardwire it to your stereo for a cleaner install. Or get a wired remote for your ipod and then throw it in glove box. Or hook up your remote to a tip wheel. Anything but the telephone console!!!

Hey Jeff - did you wind up installing the CDR-220? If you did, you may want to think about installing a Phatbox as they just released a version with the CDR-220 emulation...up to 60GB of MP3s! Much better than an iPod IMO

Yup, got my CDR220 ( with modified faceplate ) installed. I love it. Decent sound and great porsche styling. I'm not a big stereo guy anyways, I'd rather save my money on performance mods.

I took a look at the phatbox. It looks neat, but kinda of pricey ( starts at $849, goes to $1049 ).

Beto,

Checked my console and it turns out there is only one toggle switch, the other is just a blank cover. The upper toggle to the right of the phone turns the power on to the phone. Did you get an operators manual with the console phone? I have been looking for one without much luck.

Jeff - How much does Becker charge to modify the faceplate? TIA
