After having my 96 smog tested here in CA a few weeks back I passed but numbers seemed high relative to the max parameters for a few of the tests. It was 100 degrees outside and the dumb-*** running the test didn't put a fan behind the car (after 7 years of working there with a Porsche independent repair shop next door you'd have thought he'd know better). My mechanic stated that the higher temps can cause it push the limits on some of the tests. If it was a hot day and there wasn't a fan helping to cool things, you may want to try again. Not sure it this holds true about temps but probably your cheapest option. As for the guy at the smog testing shop my conviction that 95% or more of the public are complete idiots holds true. And to think I brought it there because they were "experienced" with testing porsches. Lessons learned...never let your guard down and always watch what people are doing when working on your car!

Thanks, I am going to keep this on file.
Right now I don't have to worry about it for at least a year....happy days!

Possibly an O2 sensor? I'd slap an OBDII tester on it and see what codes are being reported...
