noisy lifter
Well I've read everything I can on the subject, but would like some moree feedback if possible. 96 with 11,000 miles, lifter was fine then took out and ran a couple runs at high rpms. Noticed a ticking noise. Oil was changed at 10,500 with mobil. Today I added a quart of risolone and have noticed some quieting already. Do I need to change oil right away as it only has 1000 miles on it and its not cheap. How long should I go before I do Change the oil. Thanks fish993

We drove our car from Dallas to Aspen a couple of years ago when our 97 C2S had 14,000 miles on it and on the way back a lifter or lifters were making noise. After we dropped it off at the Dealership they told us that the valve guides were worn. They also told us that they have seen a few of these cars with very low milage with this problem. The good news is once it was presented to Porsche they paid for a complete top end even though it was out of warranty. Just thought you would like to know this.
Good luck,

Cause unknown! These cars don't like to sit up. They really want to be driven. Porsche sometimes does that when they think there may be a trend happening. IMHO Porsche really stands behind thier product.... Park Place was the dealership in Dallas.
The story they told me was my car was bought new at Park Place, always serviced at Park Place, and the valve guides should not go out on a car with 14K on it. The real kicker was they already had three other car before me that the same thing happened to and Porsche took care of them in the same manner, so a precedent had been set!! Just wondering "GreatefulJED" why do you ask?"

I have also found that PCNA will sometimes pick up the tab even though they are not obligated to. My 98 cab was out of warrantee and an oil leak from one of the valve covers began to develop...PCNA covered it no questions asked. Helps if you have a good relationship with the service manager who will push on your behalf.

On my tip I have developed noisy lifters and what appears to be worn valve guide on an exhaust valve ( I say apparent because I have not really had it checked out - just looked at and no damage appears through a scope) - I am scared of what my dealer might say!

Normally, us "nuts" change oil (& filters!! Filters were changed at 10,5k also, correct?) every 3000 miles even though Porsche's recommendation is a lot more.
My guess for your problem is that it might be a stuck lifter, especially since it's a garage queen, not a driver.

My lifter was totally collapsed (34K miles). Glad to hear that your is loosening up. Don't think I would want to leave that Rislone in there for very long. Once it is quiet again, I would change the oil and both filters again. With your very low mileage, the car could have some gunk built up. I gather that the lifters are the most sensitive component to contaminant buildup. Good luck.

Not necessary a track day, spirited driving in general but of course, a track day will really clean things up!
