Default OK I have a TT on the way-Driving skills?

I have many years of experience behind the
wheel of a high performance Porsche...my
1970 914 1.7. Now TT shows up and basically
i have not one skill required to drive this piece
of art. What do you vertran guys suggest I do
so I dont make the same mistakes that the Italians
do with their Lambos?? what kind of DE events,
visits to Willow springs etc. there are plenty
of long loney roads out here. suggestions?
PCNA CLubs? What. I am a skilled mountain
biker.
You guys are gonna get tired of me while I
have to wait for this TT ( I still may ship depends on
time frame) And when you do, just remember my
wife! Pity the poor woman!

From one old guy to another: be careful mountain biking so you don't break something and become unable to drive the car!

I think autocross is the best venue to start learning the limits and handling characteristics of your new car. It's safe and fun. Once you have the feel for the beast, then start doing DE's. In CA Thunderhill is a great course to work on because there are only two walls (one on each straight) and you are unlikely to make a mistake that puts you into a wall or a situation where you are likely to roll. I've enjoyed DE's with PCA and TracQuest. Kim (Silver Bullet) posted a list of the CA DEs about a week ago.

Enjoy the new car.

oldguy,

A really fun track, right next door to you is the Streets of Willow. Its a lot slower and more technical than the big track, and almost impossible to do any serious damage. Should be way more fun than an autocross, IMHO. Who knows... maybe a REALLY old guy will dust off his nomex and join you.

Aren't you about to leave for Boise?

Boise where its Noisey is tommorow, I am trying to figure
out how to get to New haven from there. It depends on
my equity line. She told me 4 days and that was 3 weeks ago.
Its approved so thats no problem, but getting the funds
is another issue. Richard told me if I come out, I get to drive
a turbo S, a ruf turbo, an X50 and a 95 GT2. so I am thinking
I am going out there! Still may ship it though.

OK. Old Guy. Here is some driving locations where you can start building your skills.

Start your journey at Lime Rock in Conn. Actually, you should be able to take your car there on a test drive since your seller is in Connect-the-dots. Then start west over to Watkins Glen in New York. Once you are able to hit 160 MPH coming up the hill before the 'bus stop", then you can head west again into Ohio and your stop at Mid-Ohio. Then head down I-70 to Indidanapolis and see if you can sneak onto the F1 course at Indy. There generally aren't any guards there so just take your car on in. A little stop then at Road America before heading south to Texas World Speedway. Then maybe a quck stop at Phoniex International and on to Las Vegas Speedway, and lastly stop at the California Speeday. Damn, then your home.

There, I have driven you across the country, and by the time you drive these all of these tracks you'll think Mario Andretti is a rookie.

I agree w/ Steve. There are many POC events at the Streets of Willow and you will have a blast there. Actually, with your TT you will literally blast your way up the main straight with a lot of speed! If you decide to go out there w/ the POC let me know. I became a certified POC instructor two years ago, but I haven't instructed since August, 2001. However, if you go out there then I may go out to instruct for that day.

Viper, were you the backseater in Top Gun? If I go
out there I will make a beeline for home based on
the fact i would like to continue to be married.
your plan is good but I would have to make a stop
at the lawyer track for a quickie divorce.

Rich I would love to take you up on that! Since
I live in the Crest of the Ridge, I am only 50
miles from the streets of the willow!

OG,

Sounds great! Just let me know when you want to go out there. Normally an instructor will ride with 1-2 drivers, so I'll make sure to let the chief driving instructor know that I'd like to have you. At that time you'd probably have to reveal to me your true name, since the chief driving instructor may not know who Old Guy is!

For the POC website, you can go to: www.porscheclub.com

You'll meet a lot of neat people, especially in their Short Track Series.

Bob, I have asked my wife if one of the first
trips we can make is to your house to donwload
my OBDII codes, so I may be able to come
check out your F14.
Rich I will give you my real name no problem
but that would be great, I want to know how
to drive this car. Then I want to learn to maintain
it. I maintain the families motocross bikes. But
alas they are water cooled!
I am going to have to talk to Bozo about
my oil. I use Mobil one in our yamahas.

If you haven't looked into the various driving schools, that may be worth looking into. Remember, what you learn in the driving schools, you keep. Unlike all of our mods we keep putting in our cars!
