Expected Lifespan of a Steering Rack?

I haven't dealt with the rack personally, but 3 years and that mileage is not appropriate for it to fail. Bad rebuild or some type of abuse would ha e to be the reasoning for it fail so quickly. I would contact the rebuilder and start trouble shooting solutions from there.

I just bought a replacement power steering rack and it came with a 3-year warranty. I don't know if this is the case for your supplier, but that seems abnormally low mileage for it to fail again.
I got my 993 recently so I cannot tell you how many miles were put on the now failed steering rack. GL!

Rack life has to do with the quality of the core the rebuild was made from. A less than ideal core has parts that are not perfectly smooth because of corrosion or the weld on work done to fill in corrosion pitting. The longest life rebuild is one made from your own rack that has just been removed from service and has little or no corrosion as compared to a rebuild made from a rack pulled from a dismantled car that may have been sitting on a salvaged vehicle or shelf for a while. I learned this when I got an exchange rack and sent it back due to its condition and had the rebuilder rebuild my own rack fresh off my car instead. Using your own rack delays buttoning up your car for about a week but it is well worth the wait.

PS a good rebuild should last for many years. Although most are warranted for 90 days or a year.

I had my rack refurbished last year and it failed again after 6 months. The refurb company reworked it again under warranty but commented that the cause of failure was using Pentosin fluid rather than Dextron which had attacked the rubber in the seals. It is back in the car now and I have filled the system with Dextron.

Mine has been perfect, but a week before I left for Parade it started a slight leak, when I was in for a oil service the leak was a flow and we put in a brand new rack from Porsche! Stupid expensive but hopefully it will last.
I say every 30k replace all the PS fluid and it should last a lot longer. I did this in the C4 but not the C4S, and the C4 is still on it's original rack with 4x the miles on it.

It seems that higher mileage cars are less likely to have the steering rack leak. I wonder if the car sits a lot, some internal gaskets dry out or something else happens.
