Default RS Clutch

Where is everyone buying their RS clutch and light weight flywheels? Any issues on 1996 MY cars with respect to idling?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure where to get them (FDMotorsport?) But I have the setup in my '96 and have no idle problems. Really like the whole thing, though I haven't driven a stock one. There is some chatter after the car is warm and stopped in neutral, not a big deal.

I see FD has a lightweight flywheel/clutch combo for $1795. Would this be the RS clutch? What is the difference between an RS clutch and a regular clutch?

Patrick Motorsports balances the complete assembly. Not sure if the others do it as well.

Yes, this is the RS config
Clamp force is higher on the RS PP and the disc has a sprung hub
The dual mass setup dampens engagement via the flywheel

Hope this helps

Well this seems like a decent price. Whats the average labor time to install? Does the motor need to be dropped to replace the clutch?

No issues with idle on my '96. Stalled exactly once when I revved high after my top end rebuild (after proper breakin of course), but not since then. Seems like computer learned about the lighter flywheel and compensates when dropping back to idle.

Also, no issues with the "gravel in a tin can" noise at idle that some have reported. It is touchy, though, have to keep the revs up so I don't stall when backing onto my slightly inclined driveway.

I was looking at buying from one of the above mentioned vendors but I was lucky enough to stumble across a post in this forum selling a very lightly used set for considerably less than I could find the set new at that time. Note that some shops don't like it when you supply your own parts, you might want to check if whoever you use has an issue with this.

Some have stated clutch can be changed without engine drop, but not sure if that includes the flywheel. Certainly much easier with engine out I should think. Did all the work myself so no idea re: labour cost, but I'd guess shop charge would be about a day each to remove & reinstall the motor /tranny, plus a few hours for the clutch itself. And then there are all the "while you're in there items"...

Which pressure plate are you selling? The stock 993 pressure plate has a higher clamping force rating than the stock 964 pressure plate which is the "RS" pressure plate.

I've been down this road when I replaced my original clutch with the RS clutch kit on my C4S.

For a AWD set-up like the C4S, my mechanic wanted to drop the engine to do the RS clutch. You don't absolutely have to, but most mechanics I talked to when I replaced my OEM clutch with the RS clutch recommended dropping the engine on a AWD car.

If your engine has never been out, it also is a great time to do other "while you're in there...." jobs like a new rear main seal and spark plug wires, etc. that are easy to do when the engine is out but really difficult when the engine is in place. You'll save a ton of money in labor if you do these jobs when the engine is already dropped.

Count on about 15 hours labor to drop the engine, replace the clutch and put the engine back in. My shop's rate was a typical $100/hr for labor, so with the RS clutch kit and labor, the total should run you a bit over $3K just for the new clutch and install alone.

MikeJ & I just replaced with the clutch on my C4S without dropping the engine. Though, did remove the torque tube makes it a *lot* easier.

Stunning difference. Car revs much faster, clutch feels like a turbo (very light). My only regret was not doing it earlier..

Definitely increase in noise (as mentioned earlier in the thread.. when it's warm) and gear lash. After a few hours of driving, actually prefer it!
