I use a short funnel to make the opening wider and to avoid spillage.

The procedure I use is to park the car on a level surface once engine has reached normal operating temperature. Then, leaving engine idling, open the engine lid and start to slowly add oil. Peer through the rear window at the oil level meter while pouring. You should see oil level start to climb. Stop when needle indicates 3 o'clock position.

Just did this an hour ago, in fact It helps if you cross check your oil level gauge with the dipstick reading occasionally so that you know how reliable your oil level gauge is.

Pull the accordian style tube out, and always keep a spare 1lt bottle to use for filling purposes....

No I did not know about the 'accordian'. I do now. I have put the green pointy hat on and I am standing in the corner.

Thank you.

Er.......did my 964 have an 'accordian'?

Or do it bozo style... Pull on the accordeon tube... Pour oil and watch it leak in every possible direction all over your engine, as the accordeon slowly disintegrates in your hands. Give up, clean the mess, rip the stupid accordeon out, get a funnel and try again ;-)

Not speaking from experience or anything.. ;-)

Phrase of the week -

'Did my 964 have an accordion?'

Piers, that's twice you've made me laugh today.

There wasn't an "accordion" on the 964 oil tube. I find it works well. Pull it out gently and hold it up with the right hand and pour with the left. Just pour slowly as the "accordion" has a "grate" at the bottom and it will overflow if you are trying to pour too quickly. I've never spilled a drop doing it this way. I've never liked the idea of a funnel unless there is no other way to add oil (concerns of having to clean the funnel afterwards, and before using it again, etc.) Understand you've had some 40C days across the pond...with the A/C we've got over here the heat is not as big of a issue as it is in the old country...Cheers,

Hi Guys,

I have a much easier solution. Next time you take the car to your garage, ask them to do it! It always works for me.

Cheers,

David

Hi David

Yep the accordian works well....nice touch.....agree funnels are a hassle...35C in London...country grinding to a halt!

You've got a nice pair of cars - New Mini is a winner!

The key to keeping your car in good condition as it gets older is maintenance. That includes everything from washing it regularly to ensure it remains free from caked-on grime, to more involved jobs that you might prefer to leave to the experts, such as getting it serviced every year.

You pulled a 12 year old thread from the abyss in order to tell us that??

Ahh... No wonder both my cars are in such poor health.

If yours hasn't and you can pull it out, then throw it away as it will break up eventually. The you are into pulling pieces of plastic out of the filler tube, which in themselves slow down the ingress of oil.

Haha - just noticed this is an eleven year old thread!! for sure all those 'accordians' are gone by now. Also I know it isn't 35 degrees in London right now.
