I had a great time. The roads and were great! The roads we have in South Orange County are too short to make it worthwhile!

Thanks again to Temple for setting it up and Fred for being the Tour Guide!

Great pics, all (especially that B&W one). Glad you all had fun, and I'm bummed that I couldn't make it. Post the next time you organize another one. Maybe on a Saturday??? (puhleeaase). Take care!

Damn, look at what I missed out on! I am SO bummed out. And the kicker is that you guys went right by my house; could you please honk next time I oversleep?

Sounds like everyone had a blast. The early morning was a good idea, as there were TONS of CHP’s around later in the day, including an all-white CHP car (I thought those were specifically designated for 18 wheeler harrasment?)

I sure hope that you guys do it again, and soon! And if I haven’t found a TT by then, I would love to act as some ballast for someone. As a tradeoff, if we get chased by a CHP, we can blast up my driveway & hide in the garage.

Max - Great pics and looks like it was lots of fun. Was that an Aventura Green C4S or C2S in one of the pics? Looks like a beautiful and unique color.

Yes it was a very fun run.
The high points for me were:
1). Fred giving great "Route notes" on the radio as he clipped right along. I was astounded at his ability to do this at speed until somebody told me he was driving a tip. Then I was merely impressed.
2). The sound of my turbos echoing off of the canyon walls.
3). The ripping sound of the 964 turbos taking off.
4). The sound of 15 radar detectors going off simultaneously when the very nice Highway Patrol officer pulled up when we were parked on the lookout just past the Rock Store.
5). The spectacle of Steve putting his teeth in and waving his cane at every one and shouting "Slow down there sonny!" sounding just like Walter Brennan.

I finally figured out that Steve was following me and kind of using me like a canary in a coal mine. I think he figured that if I could make it around those corners in one peice, he would be fine since he actually knows how to drive

Here's how we know that Scott hasn't graduated to "old fartus emeritus" status yet. Us really old guys know you Have to take your teeth OUT to shout, lest they go flying across the road.

A comment about Rennlister Temple. From some conversations we had a few months ago, he knew I was interested in 1996 Porsche sales and road test literature. He thought I might be at the run, so he brought a nice assortment of magazines and videos. He loaned them to me without any hesitation... a really nice gesture to a total stranger. Thanks Brooke... you are a Rennlister in the grand tradition. BTW, the material was great fun.

As the unofficial HWFM Tour Guide for this run, let me just add a few thoughts:

First, will all of the Turbos in the group, I set a quicker pace because I knew that they would want to get out of first gear without running up my stock exhaust - so I thought I would give them some room.

Second, thanks to our friendly CHP officer we knew how many unmarked "Special Enforcement" CHP cars there would be (4), how many regular units (2), and I think two other units of some kind. We also knew where they would be, and where they wouldn't be. One of the photos actually shows him sitting under a stop sign as the line of P-Cars waits to cross Kanan Rd. Right where he said he would be. We also passed him again on Mulholland Rd - each time he was kind enough to announce his presence in advance by leaving and running with his radar on. I must say this in the most positive encounter I have ever had with the CHP - he acted more like an enthusiast than an officer of the law. I nominate him in absentia for HWFM Law Enforcement Ambassador.

Third: I have participated in 4-5 runs with Rennlisters, and just like P-cars - no two runs have been the same. This run was the longest and included the most cars. There were opportunities for taking in the sights as well as giving the cars (and there drivers) a little exercise. I heard some concerns about the pace being too quick for some, and not quick enough for others. In the end, everyone drove within their comfort zone and everyone stayed safe and sane. With 15 different cars and drivers, I did the best I could and had a great time doing it.

I have been with other groups that set a pace that let's just say used more of the car's design features and capabilities. I say, to each his/her own.

Fourth: You may not know this but you still need your hands to shift a Tip, so it does take a little skill to see the rocks, avoid the rocks, find the radio, downshift into a turn and warn those behind of the hazzard - all at nearly the same time. Now if it were a radio operated with my left foot then I would have no argument. However, mine is operated with my right hand, the same one used for shifting and steering and...well, thats another story.

Finally: Thanks again to Temple for initiating the drive, to all of those with digital cameras for all of the pics, and to everyone for making the effort to get there - I think we had representatives from three different Counties. I'm glad that you all seem to have enjoyed yourselves as much as I did. Clearly the best run I have been on to date. Let's do it again soon.

Hey FB,

If the pace was a problem, maybe next time we should stagger two groups. Apexer's and non apexer's. We can let the non Apexers go out first and then we can play catch up.
Just a thought...

I for one, thought the pace was perfect. A little faster in the twisties, especially through Decker (?) and a little slower in the straights. I doubt any CHP's would give tickets in the twisties. I thought this was a smart move by Fbfisher. Being two cars behind Fred and following LeeR's TT, it was the most amazing sight watching those two cars "rocket" out of the apex of each turn. I am looking forward to the next one.

Good point, B-Line. Or, we could let the Apexers out first and the cruisers out afterwards. This would let the quick guys go out without having to worry about catching the cruisers.

I plan on being at the next one as I finally get my repaired rim today! I've had the spare tire on for the past 2 1/2 weeks - not a cool thing!

B-Line,
Would all HWFM team members automatically be non-apexers by default? This is not a comment on our enthusiam for spirited driving both on and off of the track, but more of a comment that our "bylaws" require us to never hit an apex intentionally

I was among those that felt a little uncomfortable with our initial brisk pace. I brought my 16 year-old son with me, and need to set a good example. He, of course, was urging me on. I just shuffled myself back in the pack a little, and was much more comfortable. Once again... a great drive. Lets do this again in the fall.
