Sounds like what you have is the perfect platform for a race car, where the buyer would plan on replacing all of the wear items anyway. Only problem is offers will be very low, and may take awhile to find the right buyer.

If only the engine needs a rebuild, it is worth it.
There are two Major things before you decide though.
1- With that much money, always get a second opinion. Also verify the reputation of the shop with rennlisters before a rebuild, and if a full rebuild is necessary.
2- How hard a life has the 200K miles been? Got rust / paint issues also? Interior trashed from transporting animals as a pet doctor?

Only thing I'll comment on is that IF this is 200+K original, the top end will be in need of full refurbishment. Beyond that? Yeah, we don't have enough information. God, I looked at a 70K mile '95 cab about a month ago for a friend--if that's what sells for $40K (and it did sell), count me firmly having moved on in now recommending 996 Turbos/GT3s or '09- models.

Yeah, cuz I heard you're looking at this place with all the windfall profiteering from the $10K+ full, comprehesive air cooled rebuilds: http://tinyurl.com/lbg6qzw

Sounds like a great fall/winter project. Make your list now, then pull the engine this fall and either have it done,or rebuild it yourself. I purchased a 97 with oil leaks and a little rust. I drove it from Detroit to Nashville, enjoyed driving it around a bit, then pulled the engine. I ended up doing a full restoration, but I now know the car intimately and had a great time learning. The great thing about fixing up a high mileage car is that adding more miles of driving is irrelevant. Of course if that's not your cup of tea, sell it to me cheap, and I will give it a second life.:big gulp:

Where did the OP go? Oh, I know. Busy reading his PM offers.
So where is the Goofy police on this disguised for sale ad? The new "how much is my car worth" is "should I rebuild my engine?"
Probably not the case but I just like stirring the pot.

what color is the 1998?
If the car and colors are"right", then i would rebuild it no question.
If the car is not going to be a concours car, then i would look at doing a 3.8L or something while it is apart.
i have a one owner 1995 with 210000kms and i will rebuild it when the time comes without even blinking. I love the car.
