Default 1998 993 rebuild engine or sell

I have a 1998 993 with 204,000 miles on it. Has massive oil leaks and was recently told that I need to have my engine rebuilt for a cost of 12,000+

What would you do - rebuild or sell?

Advice needed.....

Rebuild it!!!!

If the car is in excellent condition, its well worth the investment.

I am sure you could find a cheaper place. If you had to pay $7k it would be worth it. And Anyways, if you sell it the buter will discount it for the amount of a rebuild cost.

Where are you located?

If you love the car and can afford it, find a reputable shop and rebuild. That's what I did. Then again, I plan to have this car forever.

I think it's an excellent feature that the Metzger engine is rebuildable. These vehicles can be driven forever; they're literally built to last. I'd rather do that than pay much more than $12,000 for a newer but disposable car with a warranty.

I'll give you $3500 for the engine. Where can I pick it up?

204k well maintained miles? Any previous rebuilds? Any previous notable work? Compression and/or leakdown done? Oil leaks don't shout rebuild... they scream "replace leaky old seals and gaskets". I assume the shop who says you need to rebuild your engine gave you other reasons for it needing a rebuild than oil leaks? Need more info...

Most here on RL wouldnt sell their car because it needed an engine rebuild.

in the big picture, if you love the car and rest is in good shape, 12,000 is pretty cheap to have a 993 with new motor. check out current prices on 993. If you want to move on to another car, different story

without rebuild...imo car not worth much.

ask yourself what car can you buy for $12K that you will like as much as your 993.

It may or may not be worth it... would need more details.
Is it Tip or manual, any accidents, does it require other repairs to steering, suspension, brakes, re-painting ?

If only the engine needs a rebuild, it is worth it.
There are two Major things before you decide though.

1- With that much money, always get a second opinion. Also verify the reputation of the shop with rennlisters before a rebuild, and if a full rebuild is necessary.

2- How hard a life has the 200K miles been? Got rust / paint issues also? Interior trashed from transporting animals as a pet doctor?
