I've heard that this happens more and more these days with our aging 993 fans. Steve Weiner recommended switching over to a fan from a turbo 993 while doing my engine rebuild. IIRC, he said the turbo ones are much more durable and cool more effectively, but cost more. An added perk is that they howl a little better, too!

Intriguing... and a couple of price checks indicate the 993 turbo fans (#964 106 015 21) actually cost about $100 LESS than the NA version (964 106 015 31). Nice tip!

I believe it requires a different housing that is more expensive.

Oh... so if it requires the turbo housing, #993 106 667 50, then yeah, that adds about a grand to the price tag. If the standard housing is damaged and must be replaced, that's about $500, so in that case the options look like:

- Standard fan $410 + standard housing $490 = $900
- or Turbo fan $300 + turbo housing $1000 = $1,300

Might be worth it if you had to replace the whole shebang, but not if you just want to put in a new fan as PM. Should have known it was too good to be true.

Oh well. Maybe we should look into a group buy for new fans...

I'm not too keen on having a fan blade shrapnel explosion in my engine bay, as the damage can range from negligible to very expensive. I understand these weaker fan blades and housings are peculiar to the 993 years. My housing began sagging and interfering with the motion of the fan blade before my rebuild ... in my mind, this is a worthwhile investment.

I have the fan in stock and can ship to you using USPS so the broker fees will be cheaper.

Let me know.

Just went thru this. I ended up with a used 993 fan and housing. As far as I can tell it was fine. I repainted it blue, to match the car as well. The cost skyrocketed, after a need for a complete engine drop, new wiring harness, engine pulley, new alt, etc.. Make sure you can account for EVERY piece of fan blade, they hide underneath the pulley and behind the alt on top of the engine itself..

I did not know about the Turbo Option. If I had to go thru it again, I'd check that out.

Jason,
What is your price w/o shipping and is it OEM or Genuine?

It is $497.20 for part # 964 106 015 31 and that includes my discount for Rennlist members. It is a Genuine Porsche part.

Jason,

Thanks for your generous offer. That is indeed a good price. Unfortunately i have already sourced a fan. The part that is holding me up is the crank pulley. Mine got a wee bit of a deformation in it and i am having trouble locating one in NA. I would really happy if you had one in stock. The part number is 993-102-050-01. I will email you this same message.

Cheers,

Karl

Does anyone know if the crank pulley bolt is reverse threaded or not?
