Default Steering Weight

Bare with me here.

I'm new to 993 ownership never driven another.

My steering seems quite heavy for a powered system. Although it feels OK no pulling or bangs etc it just feels heavy for a lightish front end.
is that the correct feel?

Can you align/adjust just the front without doing a full job which can be £600- £700 .

Its probably normal. They do feel heavy compared to some other cars. But, no where near as heavy as a non-power system. If you are concerned, ask your mechanic or drive another one around. Stace and i swapped for a few miles and I feel much better about stuff like that now... You don't know what you don't, right?!

What wheels have you got on the front?

Steve,

You can reduce the front caster a bit to reduce steering effort as part of a good alignment.

I would check & confirm tire pressures in case they are low as thats one leading cause of heavy steering (aside from excessive caster).

Thanks for all the responses. Yes I must find a local person withanother 993 to try. There appears to be some discussion over all round tyre pressures or different frt to back I have been running 34lb all round is this wrong.

That tire pressure is ok, understand it's personal choice for many ppl too. Do a search and you'll see lots of recommendations.

My suggestion would be to get the alignment checked and set up by someone who knows 993s. Unless you bought this car from an enthusiast who actively drives it, many times ppl don't check/align the cars for years, esp if they do alot of sitting in the garage. It doesn't take much to throw off the alignment too.

I often feel my steering is too light.. Maybe I should increase caster?

That depends which wheels you've got on the car.

So what wheels have you got on the car?

Standard 1996 Cup alloys no change from standard.

Just increased frt pressures and it felt quite nervous bit of self steer on bumps etc, so will let them down again.

Would love to have a full geometry check but in the UK its about £800.00 can the fronts be done seperately as I've noticed the steering wheel is a little "cocked" to the right so might have had a bang or kerb/pothole nudge.

That's just lunacy. Even if I'm stringing a car, starting from scratch in scaling it first, no way no how is it more than 3 hours of time.

I'm still not 100% which wheels you have - I would think you mean 17" so-called Cup2, which was an upgrade over the standard 16", and not the option 18" turbo1 or occasionally called Cup3.

As specified on your factory wheel/tyre fitment sticker, which is on your door/aperture, (or your Driver's Manual) 16s and 18s should be 36f 44r, and 17s should be 36f 36r.

However only a madman runs 44 on the back on 18s, but 40 is a good starting point to increase/decrease according to your own driving style.

Rubbish - a really good GEO from someone who knows the 993 costs around 200 GBP, unless a 'specialist' is ripping you off.

PM me if you want some recommendations.

Thay are 17 Cup2s tyres are virtually new, Pirrellis. If a FULL geometry check is arround 200.00 I'm happy to go with that, someone did say that as the car is more specialised (certainly than the earlier 911) and thats why its more expensive.

I have just spoken with a dealership and they will do it foe 324.00 all in on their laser facilities along with a health check. Its booked.

'Someone' was pulling your leg.

A dealership may or may not know how to set up a 993 correctly. If you are near Tunbridge Wells I'd have taken the car to Precision who are based near the Blubell Railway, and only 20 miles away down some fabulous roads.

Not only will they be better with an older car than the 'dealership', they will almost certainly be significantly cheaper....
