Porsche reveals cause of 911 GT3 fires, will replace all engines
A faulty con rod fastener is to blame.

In case you hadn't heard, Porsche was recently forced to recall every example of the 2014 911 GT3 after two European owners reported engine fires. Can you imagine watching your new $131,000 race-ready sports car burn to the ground? Not fun. Porsche responded by sheepishly collecting all 785 dispatched GT3s last month.

Now, the company has announced that a major engine defect is responsible for the fires.

According to company spokesman Nick Twork, the new GT3 suffers from faulty connecting rod fasteners, which loosen and soon cause catastrophic damage to the 3.8-liter's crankcase. This will necessitate a massive engine replacement scheme.

"We are in the process of validating the revised part," Twork said. "We will be replacing the engines in each of the 911 GT3s that have been built thus far."

What appears to be a letter to owners has also surfaced on Rennlist,stating that Porsche will arrange individual appointments with owners. It'll only take dealers one day to complete the work, but they won't be getting the fresh mills immediately.

"It will take us a little while to build the engines," Twork added. "I don't know specific timeframe but we'll do it as quickly as we possible can … first priority is to minimize the inconvenience to our customers."

The recall and subsequent (assumedly costly) fix is especially hard to swallow considering Porsche's departure from the tried-and-true Metzger engine that powered earlier GT3s.

Good question. I have seen connecting rods fail before. Unless the rod went through the block and got oil all over the exhaust I am not sure how a defective bolt could cause a fire...
Not being skeptical, just curious as to how this happened.

In reading through the thread on the 991GT3 forum (not for the faint of heart.....it's LONG!), it appears that the rod(s) did indeed end up going through the block on 2 cars.

Funny because the rod through the block scenario was not uncommon on M96 IMS failures. Don't recall references to 996/986 fires.

Wow, surprised how it was announced. In aerospace you never blame manufacturing it's always engineering. You can always fix a design but it's difficult to reign in manufacturing processes. I would hate to be the manufacturer of those bolts or the poor inspector who approved them.

But really it could have been a poorly spec'd bolt.

A real PR nightmare for Porsche.

Yeah. I can't remember where I saw it, but someone on RL pointed out that there was something (an oil pump or something?) very close to the cat that they thought might have been the cause.

So you guys think the 997.1 and the 997.2 GT3/RS are going to go up in value ? And about approximately how much ? This is sad news to all the new owners

Actually 991GT3 owners are a lot more fortunate that 996/986 owners. This time Porsche is taking responsibility for the defect and implementing a fix. They'll be fine

If only more 9X6 engines burst into flames when their IMS bearings failed then Porsche might have paid more attention to the matter... wait a sec.
