Default Need experienced advice on buying a 993/2/4s/TT

Hi all,

Just a quickie, lol.....Currently living in Australia, which is Great, only downside is we get slugged A LOT OF LUXURY CAR TAX.
So we pay 2/3 times more than everyone else.
For example, 991 carrera s, from $280,000, B8 RS4 wagon = $170,000...get the picture.

My B7 RS$ after 7 years and many mods caught fire and is dead...Im currewntly going through divorce and financial seperation in family court.
But in truth i have always loved cars, since a child, my family have traditionally wasted a lot of money on cars...and i wish to continue that, without the ego if possible.

It all depends on what judge awards me, the million im owed or 500k and i should be gratefull with that.

The 993 to me is the essence of porsche, its just a work of art, i prefer the s/C4s/TT.
First choice would be the TT, IMO, its the sexyiest porker ever built.....below are 2 link to two available for sale 1 for $125k,@ 56,000klm which is low, and one at $225,000 as it has only 26k klms, 225 is way out there but the 125k sounds reachable maybe.
questions....

1. when does a 993 need a rebuild and how much does that cost, some guy told me a 993TT = Super car bills????? I dont mind buying it, but i dont want constant huge bills.
2. how much does it cost to run a car that age.
3. 996 turbos with say 60-80k klms can be had here for 75-90k, a lot cheaper and more modern.
4. 993 S/4S the C$s with a TT wing gives me the look, but is it fast/fun enough.

they are beautiful cars, and this next purchase has to be a car i keep for years.
I loved the B7 RS4, it relly was an amazing car and i loved the interior, but that 993TT look, OMG its the mona lisa.

5. base power i think is 405bhp, how much to make it say 550hp?
Thanks fellas

heres a pic of the link in link 1,that is 125k, it has been raced, but now respayed in original areana red, roll cage, biggerbrakes, adjustable suspension, and 500+ hp, says its a ferociuosly quick road or track car, sounds like it has all the upgrades i'd want without paying, but is this the car i SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM, as its been tracvked a lot, or due to it being rebuilt/refurbished, its the one I SHOULD SERIOUSLY BUY?.

Wow, those are some prices - mind you, we have been seeing crazy prices in the 993 world lately.

You need to figure out what you are after and what its to be used for - for instance, do you want a daily driver, occasional sports car, or track car? Are you picky about it being purely stock, or heavy modification do not phase you. Get that straight, and then use it to qualify your leads. Get out and drive some cars, as many as you can, you will quickly know your exact target.

Its rare to see a TT that has been rebuilt because it wore out. You do see a few top ends being done because of the poor valve guide material that is used on all 993's, but its rare to see a 993TT engine for instance destruct unless someone is trying to get way more power out of it than it was designed to do.

Avoid the 996 Turbo because you only mentioned it because of the cost - and that should not be the main reason you get one of these cars.

550HP is really pushing it, and that requires a lot of mods and skill. Its not too hard to get the car up say 40-50Hp, but after that, you are fighting a lot of thermodynamics and the car will be much more sensitive to changing conditions.

Cheers

Mike

Welcome to RennList and I suggest you use the search function to read-up on many of the questions you asked about things like rebuild, cost of maintenance, etc. There's no one answer for any of them - some cars need a rebuild early and some go "forever" without needing one. My 1997 C2S costs me about $250 a year to maintain and that's because I choose to do an annual instead of ever 2 years. Oil change yearly and brake fluid every 2 years. You'll probably get more opinions about C2, C4S, and C2S here as this is the non-turbo 993 forum. I like the traditional "look" of the non-turbo and the simplicity of the engine, RWD instead of AWD, etc. I don't think you could go wrong with any 993. A C4S is a nice choice if you like AWD and it has the big brakes of the turbo. Find a good example and you can't go wrong with any 993...

1. when does a 993 need a rebuild and how much does that cost, some guy told me a 993TT = Super car bills????? I dont mind buying it, but i dont want constant huge bills.

- Not sure on a turbo from personal experience but from what I've read rebuild time appears to vary greatly. That "some guy" commenting on running costs was probably wrong. Air-cooled Porsches are relatively cheap to run compared with other sports car of the era. Parts are expensive but reliability is relatively high. These aren't F355s.

2. how much does it cost to run a car that age.

- No experience with cost of running a turbo but from the substantial amounts I've read, it doesn't come close to "super car bills"

3. 996 turbos with say 60-80k klms can be had here for 75-90k, a lot cheaper and more modern.

- Just say 'no.' If you want a modern turbo get the 2007-2009 which still has the Mezger motor but a much nicer interior with the classic headlights.

4. 993 S/4S the C$s with a TT wing gives me the look, but is it fast/fun enough.

- The 993 S/4S feel extremely slow compared to almost all the modern sports cars I've driven. They're a blast to drive but definitely not fast. ...and why wouldn't they be slow? They're only 282hp n/a motors. The turbo has much more power and torque.

5. base power i think is 405bhp, how much to make it say 550hp?
Thanks fellas

- No idea but if you're already thinking about upping the Turbo power, stay away from the S/4S.

I spent about $250 in non-mod maintenance and repairs on my 993TT last year if that tells you anything.

Thats obviously not a constantly, but once they are sorted, they shouldn't kill you too bad.

550hp? my opinion...get a different car. Modding a 993TT to that level is gonna have an effect on reliability, driveability, and longevity.

When I was looking at 993 turbos, I spoke to a few Porsche indy shops that said stay away from tracked turbos because of heat issues. I ended up finding a high mileage turbo with over 111k miles. It had the original engine and no rebuilds and no track time. I sold it because I wanted a GT3 after having driven one. The buyer had a full PPI done and the compression/leakdown came back with great numbers. Just be sure to get a PPI with whatever you purchase.

Default Why not....

Now we are hearing that Aussie banks pay 4-5% on their pass book accounts. Drop $5,000,000 into the bank, and in one year at 5%, you'll have the $$$ for the car of your dreams...just trying to help here. If I wanted brute performance in a cheapo car, the Suburu WRX, or a Mitsubishi Turbo fill the bill for me.

Get a 964 Carrera 2...should be pretty cheap...put a set of headers, a chip and sport muffler(s) on it and it will produce about 250 HP to the rear wheels.

993 Carrera S: Looks great with the big butt, but same HP as a 993, same brakes too,

993 Carrera 4 S: Same big butt, AWD, same 993 HP, but 150+ Lbs heavier

993 Turbo: Expensive as hell, at least in the states.

01 -03 Turbo, 375 - 400 HP, a little fugly, but bloody fast, and relatively cheap in the states...$40,000 +

You didn't mention my favorite, a 993 narrow body coupe. I have had mine since 1999, 13+ years...wouldn't part with it. Have turned it into a 993 RS CS clone on the exterior, motor bone stock except the Fabspeed exhaust.

I believe you could be seeing "super car bills" down there, as 993 parts are def not going to be cheap. In Canada it's already has hefty increase vs US, Australia I'm sure to tag on easily another 30+ % increase over Canada.

I'd check out local Porsche events to you, that would be the best way to talk with owners and get real feedback on the market there.
