993 clock spring removal

Default 993 clock spring removal

I have removed the steering wheel air bag after discharging and steering shroud and was hopeful to see the connections for the back of the clock spring But NOOO!!! How do I access the connections so I can replace the clock spring

Assuming nothing has been touched since the factory, you either need to get up under the knee bolster and cut the tape that holds the extra wiring from the clock spring to the module its connected to in order to get enough slack to pull the connectors through the steering shroud, or you will need to drop the entire lower dash to access the connectors.

Just went through this. Reaching hand in from under dash...it can be done but it is definitely not easy, i had to cut to factory zip ties to gain the slack as the new part is a 996 number with shorter wiring.

Thanks for the response. I was out there at 4:00 am looking at the situation. I don't see how to get in there. Should I remove anything to open things up or am I not seeing where it plugs in yet?

what is a clock spring and why does it need to be changed?

the clock spring sits between the console and steering wheel. It connects the electronic parts of the wheel to the car and allows it to rotate while still keep the electrical connections, like a bicycle gyro. It gets removed/added back switching between a race wheel with no airbag to an OEM one.
