New California SMOG test - no dyno nor sniffer

Burning Brakes
I had a smog test done on my 1995 OBDI 993 about one month ago. No dyno, but there was definitely a sniffer placed in the tail pipe + visual test. They checked emission levels at idle and 2500rpm.
I think different counties have different requirements that can be in addition to state requirements. Either way I passed with 100 cell cats and the tech didn't even look at the exhaust pipes nor did he really look for smog equipment (SAI system is removed). Lucky for me, I was dreading swapping exhaust again!

I got my car smogged the other week.
I detailed my problems with the computer not being able to communicate with the DMV's computer (which was overcome by cycling the key fob as detailed in another thread). No rollers for me (I have AWD on my 4S anyway) but it was just a standard sniffer at idle and 2500rpm as well.

Here is link to the type of test procedure required by county http://www.bar.ca.gov/80_BARResource...ram_Areas.html click on blue highlighted link = "Program Area Map" in second line of first paragraph.

Wow, a policy from CARB that may actually make some sense. The whole sniffer thing for OBD-II cars is really unnecessary. The car is monitoring itself with pre/post CATs and will throw a code for anything that is out of whack so the actual sniffer test is superfluous at best. The idea that the car can communicate directly with the DMV via the OBD-II port with a simple visual just makes a ton of sense.
Pre OBD-II are not as advanced in self-diagnostics so the need for a more thorough analysis does seem necessary on those cars unfortunately. Of course I doubt they would reduce the fees you have to pay.

just went for a smog in LA.... Those readiness codes were driving me crazy, I had 3 of the 5 and you need at least 4.... So I had to drive my car consistently for about 60 miles to clear another. Not like that's a bad thing

Just had my '97 tested in Mountain View (across the street from the BMW dealership). Sniffer but no dyno.. Passed with 10 HC. 115K miles on the clock and no engine internals touched since put together at Stuttgart. All 12 sparkplugs changed by me at 84K. SAI check valve also changed by me at 60K-ish.

Do all our cars require 'star certified' stations?
Almost one year ago I had to insist no rollers (4x4). They complied, did sniffer, rpm and confused looks at the engine.
Do you think the readiness code issue was due to the battery being disconnected recently? If so how long ago was the battery disconnected? I'm trying to determine if say 6-8 months of driving would tend to eventually clear all the codes.

and they are going to concentrate on trucks/diesels. But I'll believe it when I see it. If it does end, I see more exhaust mods for me in the future.
