I'm going with sticky lifter. You may find that switching to 15w50 quiets that a little. I'd not be in a big rush to do a valve job, unless you have symptoms (as stated previously). 162k miles on mine w/insignificant oil consumption, and original valves/guides. I replaced two lifters at 80k or thereabouts. The guides are more robust than I expected.

Get away from any factory recommended oil! Listen to the air-cooled experts and get the right oil for your car. The 15-50 or 20-50. I use Mobil v-twin 20w50. Some in much colder climates will even go as low as 10w40 but you should not need it in Texas (I'm assuming). Think of your motor as it was in a motorcycle. Same thing.

I was searching for something and came across this... I just figured it was somewhat fitting.

Man that sounds terrible. It makes mine seem really minor

^ this. Sounds pretty minor. You should hear my E55 in the morning, sticky lifters make a racket.

Follow up...

I read numerous more threads and settled on Brad Penn 20-50 because of Steve Wiener's comments and recommendations. It has high levels of zinc and phosphate. Also, it's going to be hot for months pretty soon and I will be tracking the car. He also suggests motul but that was harder to come by.

I warmed the car up, drained all the 5-40 and refilled with Brad Penn. The ticking is gone and the overall smoothness improved. The engine noise is noticeably reduced. That green stuff is thick!

Can someone please let me know if that's a bad lifter sound. I do not hear the ticking sound when the engine is cold, only when the engine is hot I get ticking sound. I'm using mobile1 15w-50.
