Replacement Key + Fob?
Hi all -
Tried running a search, but couldn't find what I was looking for... Apologies if this is a repost!
I have only one key and fob for my immobilizer-equipped 96. I want to buy a spare, but dealer says $450 parts +$125 to program. Any cheaper options besides simply not losing the original key???? Seems like the dealer is the only way to go on it.
I am in SoCal, if that helps with dealers that might be cheaper.

That is a price for a modern Porsche. I suspect they didn't understand your car was a 993.
The good news is there is no need for a dealer on this one.
I did a new 2 piece unit. Much better than the switchblade. I forget what I paid, but maybe ~$150 or $175. You program it yourself.
Do a search, there is plenty of information (and some gotchas too).

I did try a search, but couldn't get what I needed... If you have a link it would be very much appreciated. They actually did know it was a 993 - was in there talking to the guy myself.
Trinitony - This has come up in my looking too. Seems like the key is standard so I could order from Pelican and have it cut by anybody, and then just buy the fob from the stealer. Seem right?

Get a cut key from the dealer, unless the one key you have wasn't used much. Too much wear on the key and it will not be good match to cut another one from. Like others have said sunset has the fob thingy for ~150. then you can program it. if you figure it out let me know, I still haven't done mine yet.

Just to close out the thread - going to get the whole key and fob from Suncoast, and also the kit to change from a switchblade to a clicker, and save $150 versus local dealer, then attempt to program myself or may take it back to the dealer for just that.

On eBay buy any complete uncut blank key for a late 70's through 993 ,

If you buy a used switchblade type key / fob
you can buy a new aftermarket 944 style fob housing that its internals fit in.

Be sure to match the number on the fob with the one you have now. Any locksmith can cut the blank key for you and the fob can be easily mated to the car's immobilizer:

Addict. This sounds like a good idea. In my case I have a functioning switchblade model. Also have the guts to a broken one as well as a locksmith made single key. Sounds like I need to buy the housing ( possibly a 944 part ) and reinstall the guts. Is that correct? Thanks

If the remote in the broken one works, all you need is:
A) the housing (separate 944 style one is recommended rather than the integrated switchblade type, which as you have seen is quite fragile)
B) the key light head (which holds the key) 944 538 041 00 - about $20 - $35 depending where you go
Setting the immobiliser code can be a pain, but do-able. Instructions in the user manual or search this forum. Make sure you have fresh batteries in the transmitter and remember you need to train BOTH remotes during programming.

I bought it all on-line. I think I used Suncoast (or maybe Pelican - sorry, forgot). Your buying the two piece key. One part is the immobilizer and the other is the lighted head. And your buying a key blank.
The new two piece key has the lighted head. It's great to be able to see the ignition key slot.
I had the local paint store (who cuts keys) cut the key. I gave them the blank. They didn't even charge me...
Follow the instructions to program your new immobilizer. All in all, this process was pretty easy and definitely worth the money and time.

Small separate key fob (not the flip style) 993-618-259-02 - $192
Small lighted key fob with light (to go around the key) - $944-538-041-00
Cut key... don't have part number but I ordered key from Porsche and had them cut it through Porsche to make it easy.
They tried to sell me that flip key one and I told them to pound sand... it looked to cheap.

My '95 (I believe it is a 1995.5 based upon the VIN) came with a small lighted key fob and a second non-OEM spare cut key. I would like to add keyless entry to my 993. Since I don't have a remote fob already where I do begin with getting one setup?
I also think I read that no all 993s came with immobilizers. Is this so? Were they added in mid-generation (e.g. '96 and later)?
