993 Door Pocket Attachment Reinforcement
#121
DocTock - Looks pretty good! Thanks for the pictures.
If your door pocket is/was in a good position, then I would use the bottom of the existing hole for a guide when drilling through the reinforcement.
Test fit/attach the door pocket - If good, then you are done.
If not, then I would pull the door pocket off again, drill out and fill the attaching hole in the door handle with JBWeld, let it cure, and then get the door pocket where you want it and mark the door handle through the hole that you just drilled through the new reinforcement piece. Before drilling the door handle, double check that your mark is centered well enough in the area designed to be screwed into. Drill an appropriate sized pilot hole so the screw grabs and holds properly.
I hope that makes sense.
You might want to lightly sand the top edge of the ABS so both pieces have a similar texture. I think that will result in a look that won't catch your eye as readily.

Installation question!
First of all - Beside the Box, THANK YOU for taking the effort to cut the ABS pieces and mill them for the HiFi pockets! I'm not even done with the project and it looks SO much better than the other side where the repair was cobbled together with sheet metal and a lot of epoxy...
I've followed the suggestions and have successfully attached the piece with ABS cement and let it cure overnight. The weld seems good and I do not see a need to fill in the missing pieces from the original part with epoxy.
Now I need to try to place the hole for the screw.
Having read the previous postings I'm still not clear as to how to do this "correctly".
Should I base the hole in the new piece on the bottom of the hole from the original?
BTB - you describe a thought about filling the attaching hole in the door handle and redrilling from new. What material would you use to do that?
I'm on the final stretch and don't want to mess this up!

Redrilling the door handle
Driver door lid/pocket on the left - positioned well.
Passenger door lid/pocket on the right - 2-3 mm 'off'.
The door pocket attachment to the door handle dictates the horizontal alignment of the pocket to the lid.
Above: Comparison of left door lid/pocket to right door lid/pocket. Right door pocket sits 2-3 mm further out from the door than the left door pocket.

Brad, looking at the pics and thinking... wouldn't drilling a horizontally slotted hole in all these brackets solve the positioning problem for most people?

BTB,
Got mine and started the process last night! Mine are a mess due to prior JBweld job on one (easy to remove since it doesn't adhere well) and the other looks like a gloomy mess of ABS cement....so more of a problem...
But then you need tension on the hole to keep it from sliding around, so eventually it will get loose...sure you will have to retighten it. Also there's the question of vertical alignment too.

It's a good point, Keith. Could you a washer with teeth under the screw. The vertical alignment issue is what I wanted to avoid by having the hole there in the first place. That way gluing the new part to have the bottoms of the holes lining up would be easy. And the pocket would not have to be removed for drilling.
Just spitballing here, it would be great either way.
