Default PPI Recommendation in Monterey, CA for 993

Greetings,

I'm relatively new to this forum, but as I understand it this is the place to go to for all things 993-related. I am considering joining your ranks (and leaving the water-cooled world of the 986). The car I have my eye on is located near Monterey, California. This car has moderately high mileage (~160k) and some of the more recent service records are missing, so a thorough PPI is a must! The current owner accepted the car in a trade and knows very little about its history.

I am wondering if anyone here has a recommendation for a trustworthy mechanic with lots of 993-specific knowledge that could conduct a PPI for me near to Monterey? There is a local Porsche dealer, but I've read some mixed reviews about dealer PPIs.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

The closest good 993 shop is in Santa Cruz about 30 miles from Monterey.
Fastlane (831) 477-7510

There are other great shops in San Jose but that is getting far away.

If David Loop still works at the Porsche dealer he has been highly regarded for a long time, use to have his own shop.

Paul Saveedra the shop foreman at Porsche of Monterey is a good resource (David loop worked with him while at the dealer and holds him in high regard). David loop has gone back to working on the older cars on his own....

Also David Moldenhauer at C&C automotive repair n Monterey is a good independent resource in the area.

If David is working on his own again I would go that route versus the dealer. Anyone have his current contact info? You could call the dealer and ask for/leave a message for Paul asking for David's contact info.

David really doesn't specialize in the newer cars. I know he did a bit of time at the dealer but he would tell you he doesn't want to see anything newer than 89. I do not have his current contact info but imagine this would be his response.

Paul at the dealer would have his contact info as I believe they are still good friends.

Thanks for the info everyone. I'll try to track down David Loop. If that doesn't pan out, then I'll see if the seller is willing to have the 993 driven all the way to Santa Cruz.

After getting the carfax report, I've discovered that while this car has higher mileage (just under 160k), it also has had VERY little mileage put on it in recent years (2k put on it since Sept. 2006). Apparently this car went from someones full daily driver with more thank 15k/year put on it, to a full fledge garage queen.

I assume a full fluid change is in order (oil, brakes, steering, transmission(?)) due to the car sitting so long. After there any other areas I should be especially wary of due to lack of use?

P.S. I've already read quite a bit about the door hinges, window seals, valve guides, SAI ports, and the standard things to watch for when inspecting a new-to-you Porsche.

If the car is a 1995 (OBD I), then the SAI issue is no big deal.
Other things to watch for in a 993:
o leaky steering rack
o corroded resistor gizmos that control the oil cooler and A/C fans (in the front bumper)
o broken odometer gear
o leaky clutch master/slave cylinder
Good luck.

So it sounds like David Loop is no longer working at Porsche Monterey, but is still working on Porsches independently. It sounds like at this point he doesn't even have a storefront and instead works with customers on an individual case-by-case basis. I've left a voice mail, and I'll see where it goes...

I had a good experience with Tom Amon from Mobile Works West (http://www.mobileworkswest.com/).

He works out of SJ but was willing to drive to Monterey when there was a car at Mohr Imports I was considering buying.

By the way - did anyone here end up with the silver/grey C2S from Mohr last spring?

Interesting option. Is he able to do a thorough PPI without a lift? The seller in my case is a private party, and I don't know how robust of a garage setup he has.

I've heard of ppi on jackstands but thorough, you'll need a lift.
