Chain case leak question

The left chain case on my 1995 993 has a small leak and since I will have most of the exhaust system off for other repairs, I thought I'd try to replace the gasket and rubber grommets. My questions are: will I have adequate access and do I need to drain some oil from crankcase before removing the case cover?

You will have good access with the cat pipes out of the way. Just make sure the rear of the car is raised well above the front and you shouldn't get anything more than a few drips when the covers come off if the car hasn't been sitting long. If its been sitting for a few weeks (or more), I would drain the engine before starting this job since oil tends to siphon from the tank to the engine over time.
If its close to oil change time, this is a great opportunity to do this,....

When I did mine it was easy even with the cat in the way. It's a little tighter on the passenger side, and there is a heat shield there as well. I lost only a few drops total.
